FS7: SmallHD 702 Feedback

Been looking at possibly adding a 702 High Bright to my kit to compliment the stock EVF/LCD on the FS7. It's been a while since it's been discussed here. Wanted to get feedback from owners. Are you happy with the purchase, and would you do it again?

i didn't know there is a high bright version of the 702?
Our 702 is in daily use with the FS7. It's receiving a feed from a paralinx arrow. the 702 is in a wooden camera cage and powerd by a vmount brick. the setup works great!
I wish the 702 had a few more mount points on the case but the quality of the monitor itself is top notch!

Okay so enjoying it so far.

Bought some cheap 3rd party Sony NPF 550s and a single one was going strong after 2.5hrs so even if it had died there and then (which it didn't) 4 of those little slimline cheapies will get you through 10hrs for about £20 and very little added weight.

Image quality nice and lut implementation nice. Haven't decided if peaking or 'focus assist' is more accurate. Certainly the edge contrast thingy of 'peaking' is a lot loser to the setup I am used to on Red cameras and feel works quite well as it isn't as obtrusive as a red lines everywhere.

Waiting on the sunhood to be delivered, and trying to find a suitable sleeve to keep it safe and case for it along with cables and stuff.

+1 peaking. have it set to 1 or 2 on the 502.

are the SDI ports on the 702 reinforced with a locking nut/collar? they are not reinforced on the 502, which will be a very expensive repair once the warranty expires (sent 2 of them for repair in shortly after purchase last year)

Not seen the back of the 502 but the SDI connectors are solid and appear to be screwed into a metal plates hopefully they've upgraded that since the 502. Certainly seems a damn site more robust a connector than the FS7 VF ne, which almost 2 years on I am staggere dit has not broken yet.

That said ever since reading the horror stories in the other thread I've been disconnecting the sdi every time the monitor is not in use in case of accidental trips and cable strains on it.

EDIT: Thanks re peaking tip :)

Sounds really positive so far. The only reservation here is having to worry about charging a whole other set of batteries just for a LCD. I'm hoping to power off of a D-tap, but if you're able to get 2.5 hours off of one batt, that's not that bad.

The other thing I'm not sure about is losing all of the info that is displayed on the Sony viewfinder, such as the levels, filename, record light, resolution setting, etc. When you use the 702 is there a way to display that same info on the screen? I guess I've not used the SDI out of the camera just yet.

on my camera SDI 2 is all the menus exactly like you see in the sony VF in case the viewfinder breaks.

SDI 1 is a clean signal for using with luts etc and for use as a client monitor

That's 2.5hrs off 1 of the tiny versions of the battery, the 550. There's 2 slots and it will hot swap so that's 5hrs minimum continuous use, and you can use the 770 or 950 versions which are bigger and have many times more power. I can't see a battery swap needing being done during a shoot on a regular day.

I had an Alexa rental that came with a 702 -> The joystick was messed up - touch it once, it'd scroll straight to the bottom, then straight to the top... try a few more times, it would work a few times.. then it would shoot all the way to the right... etc etc.
What a PITA. Definitely watch out for that when storing it.

yep I can see a dedicated lined case is the way to go as opposed to wrapping it in something nice and throwing it in the bag.

I have the 702's and power off of brand new Sony 970's and the Watson version of the 970---goes all day on two of either brand. And has 30% power left when I put them on the charger. These monitors draw no power!

Yep it's pretty impressive. Before this I had a 7Q and even when just using it as a monitor it would burn through power.

Same thing happened on 2 units I used.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Looks like it's a nice monitor but need to watch the joystick. Maybe an extended warranty would be a good option.

I think it's pretty obvious it's not a rental item and even as an owner/operator one it is still a bit delicate. I have a feeling the build quality on the cheaper 702 lite is identical to the more expensive brite model, making it very well built 'for the money' compared to its big brother, possibly making the cheaper one a wiser investment. That said you do still need it to work

I have the 702 Bright. I use it mostly for operating jibs/remote cameras, with a variety of cams - F5, FS7, F800, OB cameras. It's pretty good, even in daylight. It's not as bright as the DP7 Pro High Bright, but the user interface is a massive improvement. I really like the page builder os, and the peaking on Small HD monitors is as good as it gets. I have the hood it came with but I made up my own hood with black corflute to allow a wider viewing angle. One annoying thing for me is that the zebras only ever reflect the underlying (original) picture, they can't reflect the post-LUT picture, even on a page with a LUT applied.

Most Small HD monitors seem to suffer from issues with knobs/dials eventually. I know of several DP4s, DP6s and DP7s where the menu is a massive PITA due to the rotary encoder causing the cursor to skip all over the place. I haven't had any issues with the joystick yet, but I can believe it could become an issue down the track. I haven't really been using the focus check feature very much, perhaps if you're constantly scrolling around with the joystick that could become an issue sooner.

One little bug my 702 has is that if the monitor is left powered on while the camera is power cycled, the picture will come back ok, but as soon as you scroll to another page, the picture gets kind of randomly zoomed, & the only way to solve it is to power cycle the monitor. This has caught me out a few times where I'll be quickly checking the waveform or log picture just as I've rolled up, & I end up operating blind for 15 secs or so while I power cycle the monitor. Small HD have said they'll look into it - I'm curious if others have the same?

The BNCs on my monitor seem to be mounted onto an oval piece of metal I think?

I have a d-tap to lpe6 adapter, I got the one from small HD so if it blew it up it would be their fault but a small v lock battery will run the monitor most of the day. The only time I've used lpe6 batteries to run it I went through about 6 batts in about 6-8 hrs. But the backlight would have been up full. I also have the Canon lpe6 ac adapter.

Makes sense I guess that the 'brite' is a hell of a lot hungrier power-wise than the 'lite' at three times the brightness. Still sounds like a decent return though.

Hi Ben (or anyone with a 702 Lite and a Odyssey 7Q)

Can you test something for me? I just got my 702 Lite and when I send a signal via SDI cable to my Odyssey 7Q, the 7Q image is really messed up. Lines going through it, terrible looking.

However, when I send the image out to my older SmallHD DP6, the image is perfect. I wish I had a 3rd monitor to test it on.

Ben, can you test to see what the image looks like when sending out from 702 Lite to your Odyssey 7Q? I'm wondering if I got a defective unit.

Thanks,

Gene
