C100: Small Rig C100/300/500 Top Plate

If the handle isn't fully screwed in the play feels about the same on both plates.

I just got mine today and I noticed the same thing. I just slid the hand on the coldshoe and tested the play and it wasn't too bad. But as soon as you tighten the screw, it seems to get worse (not sure how that's physically possible but whatever lol).

Fortunately I can work with it being too lose. I put down a layer of JB Weld on the surface of the coldshoe. Once it dries I'll file it flat and test my clearances. I'll keep filling till I can get the handle to slide on with a snug fit. I will also put a thin layer on the inner rails of the coldshoe to fill in the slight gap and file it to fit there as well.

The problem with the Canon handle is always that once you screw the bolt in, it pushes the handle into the cold shoe causing it to loose contact with the inside of the cold shoe rails. Usually when you screw in a flash, the "nut" screws in place and pulls the flash up into the cold shoe rails. In this case it's the opposite that is happening. that's why the handles always have play in them. CooLLCD probably machined the inner part of the rails for better clearance not realizing this small Canon issue.

Still nothing. Emailed them and got:

"Even if we do our best to revise the size of our fixed cold shoe, the C100 orignal handle jiggles when mounted on.However, if use our own handle, the issue is not exist. So we are thinking about an adjustable cold shoe, but the load capacity is the problem we are facing, hope we can find a good solution."

At 12$ - can't they just make a dedicated C Series cold shoe mount?
Right now they try to make sth universal, that fits both their own and the Canon handle, right?

I told them to try just making the fit tighter. They said it would take a while - I'm assuming because they reckon they'll need to go through a lot of iterations to get it right.

FWIW, they are right. Wooden Camera makes a cold shoe that fits the C100/300/500 Canon handles and they still jiggle when used. WC is up front about this - it's the design of the handle that is the issue.

One the C300/500 you can easily go to a third-party handle but it's not an option for the C100 if you want XLR or the handle mic.

Well, my Genustech top plate fits great. About the same as the actual shoe on top of the C100.

My bad for jumping in here - my main point is that the WC cold shoe has the same amount of play as the Canon one. Canon's also has to fit the monitor on the C300/C500 if it is mounted without the handle, so that may be a factor in Canon's design.

Either way, for me to get rid of the small amount of play it was a matter of going to a third party handle.

Their Cold Shoe 1499 product page now has this disclaimer:

Note: Sorry it does not work with Canon C100, C300, C500's original top handle, we are designing new cold shoe mount to fit Canon C100, C300, C500's original top handle. Please just use it as a normal cold shoe.

And their response to my inquiry on a timeline for the new version:

Yes, the cold shoe for C100 is still under design, the first two versions we designed were failed, C100's original handle slightly wiggle when slide into our cold shoe, that's a frustrated issue. We hope the coming version very work well.

Has anyone heard an update on this? I bought the top plate not knowing about the cold shoe issue. I sent them an e-mail a few days ago with no response.

The one with the screws on the sides. You might be better off spending a bit more and getting the Wooden Camera one, though.

The Element Technica heavy-duty plate is the bulletproof way to go. FOUR points of screwed-in contact: Coldshoe w/allen screw, both sides, and on top stretching back. Rock Solid. With a heavy rig setup, placing all of the weight on just the coldshoe is not ideal. I'm surprised I haven't heard of reports of the top of the camera breaking off. Wooden camera has an adapter that screws into the top allowing use of the stock canon handle, but I'm using the Wooden Handle Kit w/quick release capability.

Yeah except that the top plate you suggested is for a C300.... It's not compatible with a C100...

Last i heard from them was 2 months ago. They were still working on it,but at this point i don't think we will be getting anything at all.

SmallRig has yet to get back to my e-mail I sent them last week. I might just bite the bullet on the wooden camera shoe mount.
