SLRMagic 35/0.95 and 35/1.4 Stills and Info

What I'd meant previously was that my Summilux-R 35 wasn't extremely sharp wide open... and at least at first glance, this SLRM lens seems to have more 'pop' on the open end. I'm curious how much of SLRM's optics still originate from machine vision lenses... I know Navitar, for one, make a full set of 0.95 primes (that aren't cheap). Whatever the source, they are steadily and markedly improving from their previous CCTV toy lenses.

Leica R's aren't always cheap, but it's more possible to find good used samples vs. M's... you can get most of the Summicrons (f2) in the $500-750 range. There's a lot to be said for an additional USEABLE 2 stops, of course... and sometimes it's tempting to sell off my R's to buy these newer, faster, sharper lenses. I don't know if there's any scientific advantage, or just emotional attachment that prevents it. Of course, I can justify it with the advantage that most of them work on just about anything including full frame.

The image above looks general blurry so it's hard to judge, here for example F0.95, we have a full power club parcan on it's way down to tilt towards the GH2 with the Nokton and there's not a lot of light issues going on (to my eyes, if I'm missing something please correct me), compared to the SLR Magic which is rainbowing off just an LED light. I see a halo effect around the lights as the area is out of focus, but no rings of lights outside of that.

I've found the same with the Voigt 17.5... flare is very well controlled

Flares are well controlled, indeed. In that example I see a lot of what I don't like about shooting wide open, just the overall haze/softness in the image. Often turning things milky.

It's all over every bit of the frame, especially noticeable on his shirt or below his collar line. If it's an option of having flares, which I can control externally, or better sharpness and CA control wide open, me personally I'd take the flares, trying to add sharpness to shots affected by the haze and coma never bodes well.

=T Not that it's a bad lens, again! Will be using the 17 and 25 until SLR drops theirs. That make any sense?

I can't speak for the F0.95 SLR Magic, but the T1.4 does not own over the Voigtlander period, I had the Voigtlander having parcans stressing it versus a battery powered LED for the SLR Magic, much as I love both for their individual character, if I had to draw a line in the sand and say which was the best overall for night filming it would be the Voigtlander everytime, less overall character and (me personally) I found it easier to track with. The SLR Magic F0.95 is a completely different animal, at a different price point so obviously should be reviewed in its own right. If it's a world apart then great, but let's see more nightime video, preferably from people having purchased the lens rather than having review models.

I probably should have left my post for a conversation on the T1.4 but just mentioned it as I've seen a wealth of reviews using stills for the T1.4 without using video and nighttime for a real stress test.

Yeah, sorry, I was definitely talking about the 35/0.95. I think you could compare the 35/1.2 Voigtlander to the SLRMagic 35/1.4, though. So far, I've not really seen anything from the 1.2 that would lead me to a purchase. The bokeh is very unpleasant and the CA is frightening, which likely isn't an issue for stills yet video? Different story.

And when/if there's an SLR 25/0.95 that should be pit against the Voigtlander 25/0.95.

What he says seems balanced thus far as he has specifically highlighted the razor thin DOF wide open, he's also addressed a previous argument in his comments, where SLR Magic got a forum bashing (on another forum) by a few over build issues for their F0.95 50mm. I do think "issues" with the 50mm must have been blown out of proportion as I owned one myself and didn't have issues with it (I simply sold it as I didn't happen to use it much).

Has anyone compared the SLR magic 35mm t1.4 to the Rokinon 35mm t1.5?

i'm looking to get a cheap geared 35mm to replace my Sigma 30mm 1.4

For those interested in the 35/1.4, which has its price now, here's a sharpness and breathing test:

I think testing with the Heliopan wasn't a good idea (Of course) but I am glad that they put the lens under the scrutiny of ETC mode on the GH2. That will tell you how center sharpness fairs and knowing that there's a Heliopan on this, bodes well. Could definitely be noticably sharper at all apertures.

My interest is in the 35/0.95, but seeing this makes me even more interested in that lens. Good stuff.

Also changed the topic to reflect both lenses.

This is a YouTube link so no point pixel peeping too much, this is a live recording I did, with a cover of The Charlatans North Country Boy. It's the SLR Magic 35/1.4 handheld (GH3) and the SLR Magic 12/1.6 on a tripod (GH2 Flowmotion). Recorded live then edited in Premiere in 30 mins. My focus isn't perfect but it's not far off, with hindsight not as quite as tricky to use as it felt at the time.

I was under the impression the studio had lighting but it didn't so I had just the 2 LEDS I had packed (simply as a precaution) and the normal house lamps in the background.

I would definitely buy the 35mm/0.95 for NEX E-mount when it's available in february (I hope so).

It's going to be a tough choice as to keep or sell the Rokinon 35mm/1.5 when getting the SLR Magic as I'm afraid it would be difficult to match different lines of lenses together.

It would be nice though if they come with a full lineup of Hyperprime Cine and hopefully ditch their rebranded 50mm/0.95 which as everybody knows is a rebranded japanese CCTV lens with sub-par performance and come with a new and original HQ design.

Cheers.

Where's the evidence of this? I owned one of these 50mm SLR Magic lenses myself and I don't see that it could have ever been a CCTV lens as it doesn't in any way shape or form match a typical CCTV lens in dimensions or glass size?

The one costing 1K$, not the 4K$ one of course.

Evidence here and here :

That's why I asked for a new 50mm for APS-C(or H) sensor.

Cheers.

That Goyo is an industrial lens that sells around $500, not simply some cheap CCTV lens which retail usually well under $100, which likely explains why it didn't look like a typical C mount lens. But you're correct (having done some research) that SLR Magic was a variation (or simply rebadged) Japanese Goyo lens which sold with a fair amount of mark up on top. So definitely not value for money!

Agreed. I can see how people can get mislead by others, just have to be careful about where the information comes from. There's no way that 50/0.95 is a rebranded CCTV lens.

Sorry, my bad to have mixed CCTV/industrial lens.

Nevertheless, SLR Magic needs in their line a 50mm with focus and aperture gears that complement and match in performance the two new 35's, hopefully a new design, different from their actual model which is "just" a rabranded industrial lens.

So, do you guys have any other new infos on the release date of these new lenses ? Is it still scheduled for next month ?

Cheers,
Stephane.
