SLR zoom lenses for F3

IMO Henry (CinemaElectronika) has nailed it on the head with the 3 Nikons. Such a set will cost about half as much as a Cooke ...or 8% of an Optimo. I also agree about minimizing tint and look differences by sticking to one brand.
My only concern is about those teeny focus windows. Is the manual focus in those lenses consistent enough to write/tape down witness marks on the barrel? Maybe not accurate to the mm but still better..? That's why one of my frontrunners was a Tamron SP AF28-75mm F/2.8 XR Di LD.

Unfortunately recent developments (different content bias, shrinking budgets) mean that after all my research, the F3 might get shelved in favor of a cheaper, run&gun-ish, and still very capable EX1R. I'm glad this turned into a useful thread, and hope to get my hands on an F3 soon. :)

Their manual focus ring is consistent enough to use any of them with or without any follow focus drive. I've used all of theses lenses as you mention, with witness marks gaffer-taped down on the barrel, mostly with my Canon 5DmkII... Maybe the 17-35 is the one with the shortest focus throw but still very consistent... By the way, sometimes I use them handheld onboard the 5D2 -without the mattebox, with the same Tiffen Variable ND Filter (8 stops) which is also wonderful, due to the 77mm filter size on all these 3 lenses... I have to also mention that any of these lenses extends during focusing or zooming so you can use a mattebox attached... (except for the 28-70 about 1/2" @ 28mm)...

I opted for the 17-35 F2.8 because the Full Frame Sensor of the Canon 5D... The 17-55 is a DX lens and do not have the external iris ring which is mandatory in my case.

The Tamron SP AF28-75mm F/2.8 XR Di LD is a good lens. But its not a Nikon ED, does not have an external iris ring and it extends at least half of its size during focusing which do not let you use a mattebox, mandatory for the F3 or FS100... You may want to read this review:

You might also want to give you a try for the FS100 if it suits you better off the EX1r...

Thanks for the nice info, Henry.

Wondering whether the FS100 can hold a lens like the 28-70 (2 lbs.) without added support. I'm thinking of getting one de-clicked for use with a Novoflex adapter on the 100. Any ideas ?

If a Full-Frame Nikon Digital Camera -like the D700- can hold even the heavier 80-200/f2.8ED (almost @3 Lbs), the Sony FS100 will certainly hold the 28-70 without concerns...

The german-made Novoflex is a very good and strong construction / rock solid adapter which can also control iris on G/DX Lenses without the iris ring.

Go for it! Happy shooting.

Thanks, Henry !

Does the Novoflex aperture ring operate smoothly and silently with the lens ?

I'm looking to have silent and un-detented aperture adjustment as one would with a video lens.

I just landed a Sigma 50-150 f/2.8 Nikon on eBay. But can't test it on the F3 I don't have yet until my dealer gets me a total quote on system and I can place my order ;(
