SLR Magic 12mm f/1.6 - will Heliopan VariND 58mm (slim version) work?

I already own the Panasonic 12-35 X-lens and I'm very happy with it. Most of the time I have Heliopan VariND (slim version) with 58mm filter threads attached to it. It works fine, no vignetting at 12mm.

I plan to purchase the SLR Magic 12mm f/1.6 which also has 58mm threads. It would be great if I could use the same filter for it.

Can someone confirm that this combo will work?

I'm pretty sure you will need a 77mm (or larger) ND for the SLR 12mm...they sell a pricey 58/77mm step up ring that is custom made for the lens (I bought a $5-7 generic one that works fine).

Thanks Danny.

I also read somewhere else that a 77mm step up ring is recommended but I hoped that there is a little chance that the Heliopan 58mm would also fit. So if anyone can attest from personal experience that this is absolutely impossible, please chime in.

Unless you shoot at T/2.5 or wider the filter will vignette on the GH3 (or AF100). On a GH2 it likely vignettes at all apertures.

Tiffen's 58mm VND does not vignette at all when used with the 12/1.6 on a GH3 due to it's front element stepping up to 67mm.

If you go this route consider picking up a 67mm wide-angle lens hood. I tested several hoods & settled on a very inexpensive version. It's threads are a bit shallow, but it provides better shading than B+W's.
