SLR Magic 12mm barrel rotation!?!

Been wanting to pickup some funkier lens options & considering a set of SLR Magic's.

The one thing that kept me away from their 12mm is the direction the barrel rotates while focusing. In all the photos I've seen it appears to rotate in the same direction as Nikkors, & the opposite of Cine, Leica, 4/3, Canon, etc.

However I just saw a video on SLR Magic's lens lineup where a 12mm barrel shows focus marks going the opposite direction.

Anyone know how to order this version?

Thanks,

With the Chinese New Year they may have a back log of e-mail. My 12mm was bought off eBay so I have no idea on the age of it, but I'll see how it compares to this video this evening.

Both my SLR Magic 12mm and 35mm, you turn them anti-clockwise to go towards infinity. Does that help?

Are you referencing with the lens pointed away from you? With the lens pointed away is the Infinity mark on the right with the closer focus marks to the left? That would be the cine direction.

I believe both the 35mm(s) rotate like cine lenses.

When did you purchase your lenses? And if you don't mind me asking...from who?

Thanks again,
Bern

Hey Bern, I have an SLR Magic 12mm and pointed away from you, it is infinity to the right and minimum to the left. I got it this past November from Adorama.

Same here, infinity to the right (lens pointing away from me). Mine's about a year old but having got it from eBay it could be any age.

Good to hear!

I contacted Adorama last week but haven't heard back yet.

Did you buy the dedicated focus gear too? Diidn't spot that on their site.

Thanks,
Bern

I don't have the focus gear. I thought I remembered seeing it direct from SLR Magic / Noktor but it doesn't seem to be listed now. Maybe shoot them an email.

It's no longer officially sold separate as you can damage the lens if you over tighten it, I tried begging via e-mail  and I assured them I could fit it and would do so at my own risk so they sold me the focus gear. If you buy the lens direct from them I believe it's pre-installed these days.

I double checked, actually my lens was bought closer to 5 months ago, the hard life I have just made it feel like a year.

Thanks again to both of you!

Spent some hours yesterday trawling the Internet for information on SLR Magic, & suggest anyone considering a set of their lenses do too.

Best,
Bern

Previously I mentioned emailing SLR Magic about the barrel rotaation. They responded quickly & wrote...

"Thank you for your interest in the SLR Magic HyperPrime CINE 12mm T1.6 lens in mFT mount. The 2nd version of SLR Magic HyperPrime CINE 12mm T1.6 lens was launched since mid April 2012. We have reduced the lens flare by about 30% because a lot of our customers also indicated that they prefer the lens flare. So, we just reduce part of it. The aperture ring and focus ring of the 2nd version turns in the same direction. You can refer to the following link for the current version of 12mm lens:

http://vimeo.com/56605369

The 12mm lens itself costs US$ 549.00. If you will use this lens with filter, due to wide angle lens, you need at least 77mm filter. We have an optional SLR Magic 58-77 step-up ring is specially designed for our lens with thinner inner diameter to avoid vignette. The step-up ring costs US$ 50.00 when order with the lens, and so this is the choice of lens with step-up ring for US$599.00. You can choose to have the front ring in green or black. However, early testers inform us that the front ring in green will reflect on the ND filter. So, if you plan to use filter, it maybe better to choose the front ring in black. The price includes shipping by international UPS. There maybe import duty/tax charged by country of import and the buyer is responsible for such duty/tax. Our lens has 1 year warranty. There is no return or refund policy. If there is problem reported within the first 7 days of receipt of the lens, we will arrange exchange. After that, customers have to send the lens back to us in Hong Kong for repair by postal service with tracking. We highly suggest to send lenses by postal service with tracking because we cannot be responsible for lenses that do not arrive our hands. We will arrange repair and send the lens back to you by registered airmail. Further, if you use follow focus, we have a SLR Magic lens gear for this lens. This lens gear costs extra US$ 50.00 when order with the lens, and we will install it before shipment. Once installed, the lens gear should not be removed from the lens. Uneven pressure when removing the screws may damage the lens barrel. The warranty will be void if our lens is tempered with. If you order the lens gear separately, you have to send the lens back to us and we will install it for you, and the cost would be US$ 120.00 including new packaging and international postage by UPS or EMS. Since the installation of lens gear is not for everyone, our distributors do not order the lens with gear, and you have to order directly from us. Pls send us your day time mailing address and day time contact phone number, and we will issue a Paypal Request to you. Await your further instructions.
Best rgds.,
