Slowmo

Lucky Duck
Working with the Beta of Premiere Pro CS3, I tried out the time warp effect and slowed down the footage to 25%. Everything is at the effect's default.

I think with some tweaking it could look really good. There's some obvious frame blending going on here but there are many options to choose from which I haven't investigated yet.

24f footage with 1/48 shutter

disjecta,

I just tried to download your slo-mo clip, but it says that the connection with the server was reset.

Looking forward to this clip myself, as I am looking to transition from Premiere to Final Cut, however that new time warp function in PrePro CS3 sounds interesting.

Yep, that did the trick. Thanks.

Also, how do you think the time warp compares to other methods like separating fields in After Effects or FCP, or products like Twixtor?

The footage looked pretty good though. I can definately see some frame blending effects on the dog's ears and the man's hands, but they were not too distracting. Plus those could come in handy someday as an effect for a sci-fi movie.

I haven't played around with it much to know how it holds up to other methods. It reminds me most of Retimer. Also, this clip has very little movement in general so it's an easy clip to do slowmo on and still keep the integrity of the original. I'll post more as I experiment further.

Looks great, disjecta!

I'd certainly like to see some clips with more movement if you can manage it sometime.

Keep up the good work!

Awesome! I had no idea you could make it look that good (and here I was worried about not having variable frame rates). Nice work.

Thats pretty smooth motion though, look forward to seeing some more tweaks. I think we are at the point where software should just about be able to get it right.

This is actually very very acceptable for 24f footage with 1/48 shutter. You usually have to shoot interlaced with very high shutter speed and use the very tedious twixtor to get good results. I made some small tests with twixtor that took hours to render. How long did it take you to render this small sequence, Steven?

I've recently done some experimenting with Time Warp as well, and found the results to look quite good when using a 1/120 shutter (even at 24F). It really looks like the HVX's 60p mode...

Don't be misled by my example. I tried applying the same effect to a scene that contained a lot of motion and it fell apart. Whole portions of the frame warped instead of the subject I was targeting. That's not to say that good results cannot be achieved but they require a lot of trial and error. The end result will simply not come close to the variable framerates of the HVX200.

I tried different options (pixel, whole frame, and frame mix) on a scene where the camera pans on a kid running and it was like a bubble of motion surrounded the kid. It was an interesting effect...if I wasn't aiming for slow motion.

Well from my understanding theres a few new options in the upcoming fcs2, hopefully they will make a difference rather than using third party software. We'll see.
