C100: Slowmo workarounds on the C100?

I've seen a few people posting about slowing down 60i footage on the C100 to approximate 720 60p shots but I have yet to see this online. Has anyone here tried that yet or have another solution?

I'm strongly considering selling my AF100 package and moving up to a C100 kit but not being able to do any slowmo Broll shots is disheartening.

Not much luck here. Is there really no one who has more information on this? If it's not possible, I would consider that helpful input as well! :)

I have only tried the obvious: Take 60i footage into a 1080, 29.97 timeline, deinterlace always and set speed to 50%. It wasn't horrible (as I expected). It was even usable in my opinion but I'm not making movies here. Your mileage will vary of course but you might be pleasantly surprised as I was. Give it a try...

I have tried a couple of ways myself and get the stutter slow mo with Vegas. Better off doing 30P and slowing down 50% max and disable resample. I have not been able to get the smooth slow-motion as you can with 60P to 30P or VFR. I watched Cowpunk video he posted of the 60i footage converted to slow-mo compared to 1280X729 60P slowmo converted and on the TV the 60i footage had the stutter look. Twixtor is the only option it seems for decent slow mo till and only if Canon releases 60P AVHCD 2.0 for the C100.

I'm going to run some tests using FieldsKit from RE:Vision Effects. Initial tests have looked very good, but I just haven't gotten around to getting good subjects for slo-mo yet.

After Effects de-interlacing works pretty well. The image comes out a bit softer, but better than expected. I may try some of these other tools and do a comparison in the next week or two.

Dumb question maybe, but.

Do you have to shoot in 50i mode to use the Fieldskit de-interlacer or can you still film in the C100's progressive mode and not remove the pulldown so it's still in the interlaced wrapper?

Cheers,

Phil

It's been a long while since I have converted 60i to 60p footage. If I recall you can use a bob field doubler in virtual dub, it turns each field into a frame. I also remember using aftereffects, to convert 60i to 60p under interpret footage, don't take this as gospel. it's been a long while.

I find it rather ridiculous that its 2013 and we still have to do this crap... Why Canon, why do you do this! :crybaby:

I've finally gotten around to test converting 60i footage in AE, FieldsKit, and JES deinterlacer, dropping it down to 24p (on a Mac, BTW). They all work about the same. Either way, there's a drop in resolution (although it's not as bad as I expected) and aliasing can be a problem. The only alternative that I can see is upsampling 30p footage in Twixtor. But then you get Twixtor artifacts, which I think are more distracting than the other methods, but this is a matter of opinion I'm sure.

Here's my method in AE:

Rt click on clip > Interpret footage > Main: check separate fields, check preserve edges (best quality)
Make a new composition: Settings: set frame rate (to desired rate)
Rt. click in timeline: Time > Stretch: factor = 200%
Render the composition

In PP add a .1 or .2 directional blur (vertical), then sharpen a bit.

If you're editing in PP, FieldsKit is probably a bit easier, but I had a problem in that I could not extend the clip past it's original duration after I set the plugin to double the frames (needed if you want slomo). There may be a way to do this, it's just not obvious to me.

I really hope Canon can and will do something about this with a firmware update! Even 60/720p would be better.
