Slow upload into FCP??

Hi guys, I'm using a 7 in 1 card reader from Kingston to take my footage from SDHC card into FCP. How fast should this be relative to footage? It feel incredibly slow.

Two things:

1. Why not copy to an internal drive and not be constrained by USB?

2. What Mac are you using? That affects transcode speeds.

i usually copy my private folder to either system drive or most often a fw800 drive. then when i go to transcode i hook up to an esata external drive where my capture scratch is located. i'm using a macbook pro 2.16 and i get about 1.3x transcode times.

I've got a macbook pro 2.16ghz - I am just taking the files straight off the sd card. Also I'm reading hrough an express card - should that not be fast??

its not going to be as fast as copying over to an internal or fw800 drive. those express card readers for SD cards are pretty much usb 2.0 speed.

So would it be faster to copy from my express card reader onto my external HDD? I don't see how that would work?

Transfers are only as fast as the slowest part of the chain.

If your external is FW, then why would it be difficult to transfer through EC/34 to FW HDD.
