Slow Motion using 480/60i or 480/30p?

I am trying to obtain a slow motion effect using SD as 480i or 480p. I mistakenly thought that 480/60i was indeed a setup for 60 fps, but now see the error of my ways. I have searched Barry's book and this forum for more info about recording SD at 60 fps, but do not seem to be able to find the answer. Is there a way to do this, or should I be recording 780p at 60fps, and then work out the SD down conversion in post?

Check into your manual a bit- if you want slow motion on an HPX170or HVX200 you should be shooting 720p/24pN. You can easily downconvert back to 480. The slowest slow motion possible is 60fps over 24p timebase at 720p. This is all in your manual. :)

Thanks Noah, I will do that. I have an HPX170, and the default setting when I turned it on was 720p60, so I have lots of test footage I am now playing with in FCP. It seems that the easiest way to get 30 fps slow mo is just to set the speed of the clip to 50%. It looks great. I will also try the 720p/24pN. And I will start looking in my manual before posting here. Thanks again.
