i actually feel pretty stupid about this. im sure its something really simple im not getting here.

what are the steps for achieving slow motion 60frame videos with the d7

i shot at 60p. im able to slow down the clips in playback mode on the camera. but when i import into final cut into a 24frame seguence it comes in looking real time and crappy. when i try slowing it down using final cut it looks stuttery and bad.

what am i missing guys???

while im at it. are we just supposed to drag and drop h264 vids straight into final cut or is there a conversion that should happen first.

many thanks, josh

On a Mac, you need to conform them to play back at 23.98 with Cinema Tools. Also you'll probably want to convert from the native H.264 to something like ProRes or Cineform for editing.

On a PC I'm not sure how one goes about conforming frame rates of a video clip. I do know in After Effects you can just interpret the clip as 23.98 without touching the original file, nice to have but not a great way to edit.

Anyway hope that helps!

Thanks. Wow that's way more difficult than I imagined. Not sure if I even have cinema tools. I cut on final cut on a MacBook pro. Is apple pro res the best format? Which one? 422?

really? no hq?

really? no hq?

id heard from using the nikond90 and converting that hq was the way to go with pro res. not the case?

okay I basically figured it out in cinema tools. i have it opened and "conformed"
now does anybody know how i spit it out to a new quicktime clip??? none of the export options in cinema tools make sense

you don't need to export it, just close it. it changes the actual file. i usually make a copy of that file with 60p in the file name. conform one, leave the other alone.

beautiful. thanks for that. i was confused as hell.
one last question. is it better to convert to apple pro res before doing the frame rate conversion in cinema tools or after??? and again apple pro res or apple pros hq? im hearing different things

It makes no difference. What Cinema Tools does when "conforming" is simply change a single number in the metadata/header of the QuickTime file. It doesn't affect the content of the clip in any way, just the playback speed.

thanks. and this may be posted somewhere but im just not finding it
what is the ideal format for canon 7d files in final cut? apple pro res hq? can we just use quicktime to convert?

There's no "ideal format"; it depends on your needs and your resources. I don't really use ProRes, so I don't know what the difference between the HQ and the standard version is. I'd guess that you should go with HQ since it's presumably "higher quality," but it probably uses more disk space and might be more demanding on your computer.

There are some people who edit H.264 natively. The advantage is no tedious transcoding step, plus no loss in quality (since transcoding to a lossy codec like ProRes entails some loss, even if it's imperceptible). But the disadvantage is that it's more demanding to decode, and you'll need to render clips more often.

CineForm is commonly regarded as a better codec in terms of performance, but it's not free.

You could also use a lossless codec such as SheerVideo (also not free), but disk space consumption is enormous.

can we just use quicktime to convert?
I think that if you do Log and Transfer in FCP, FCP will transcode the clips for you so that you don't have to separately go through QuickTime.

thanks so much for the help/info. i guess i've been spoiled by the sheer ease of dvcpro and the hvxx200

ok last question. my compressor is down so im using quicktime to convert. for apple pro res hq you have the option of enabling 4:4:4 chroma filtering. yes or no?

Not unless you have the latest version of Final Cut Studio. There's still no 4:4:4, but there is 4:4:4:4.

Have you tried Log and Transfer yet?
