Slow Motion Footage

Good evening.

I have read the recommendations here and in the DVX book about shooting for slow motion (60i at 1/120 slowed to 40% in post), but I'm wondering about footage that is shot at 24pA without slow motion in mind. Are there optimal settings in post in order that such footage can be slowed down effectively?

Cheers,

John

Well... short answer: yes, but it takes some work to make it effective. After Effects does a fairly decent job, and Twixtor is bad@ss - easily your best bet.

That being said; the higher FPS you can shoot, the better the results.

I just slowed down some footage of a hawk attacking an eagle in 24pa using the twixtor demo- looked great.

Yes, Twixtor is the intelligent app that can take progressive frames and interpolate based on pixel motion prediction.

60i to 24p at 40% is the quick and dirty, tried and true, no cost, no hassle way to get pretty good slow motion.

Josh,

Thanks again for chiming in. 60i at 24p etc. seems the way to go IF you plan to use a piece of footage for slow motion purposes. But is seems that if one has shot at 24p(A) without the intent for slo mo but then changes his mind then an app like Twixtor might be the best solution. Would this degrade the image in any way?

Cheers,

John

Technically yes, your image will be degraded because the software is making pixels up that didn't exist before. As to how far you can push it before it starts looking poor depends on the footage and what you define as "poor quality."

The possible drawback with interpolation is that you can get weird-looking effects and artifacts if the plug-in "guesses wrong," in essence. Like some weird morphing. That's why Twixtor has controls to tweak to get it to look right, and why it takes longer and more experience.

However, you will get sharper images, and you can go beyond 40 percent slow motion to much slower looks as well.
