FS7: SLOG-3 plus this this look = "Kodachrome"

Most everyone has seen this footage already - but to me, this grade gives it a nice, 1950's Kodachrome look:

It's a plugin called VistaLut by Cineplus. Costs all of 18 bucks.

Not sure what's so amazing about this preset. You could create this grade in seconds and turn it into a preset yourself. I certainly wouldn't pay $18 for it.

Uhh ohh...

That's what SLog footage looks like, if you just put some sort of preset "look" on top
instead of proper delogging first.
To each one his own. I don't like this kind of looks-like-this looks-like-that preset.

I have filmconvert here and like it a lot for quick grades and the grain it produces.
It helps footage look less cold and more organic. But I will use a proper SLog LUT
first and then put filmconvert looks on top where I am very careful with the color
slider...

YMVV...

Just for info, the other thing to know is that the guy behind Cineplus was one of the most disreputable characters we ever had to deal with over at another forum which I was chief moderator for. First he tried to pass off payment for his "looks" as a donation system (with a fixed price I might add) and then once he was repeatedly warned and banned, came back as various "new member's" constantly changing his IP address for more than a year in order to pitch his looks. It was like a small pest that you try to eliminate from your house repeatedly, but nothing works short of an atomic bomb. Very annoying and very dishonest.

To top that off, his grades were fine, sometimes very nice, but nothing more than that. Grades turned into presets. Anyone can do this stuff if they are willing to put in a little work to learn how.

Not sure where the "jaundice" comes from , there is not a hint of yellow on my monitor. Film looks are subjective, what I love you may hate and vice versa...I would invest more time than just dropping a look on, but thought it was cool that this particular preset is almost exactly what I want for the next feature, with no work at all

She doesn't looked yellow-ish on my uncalibrated laptop monitor, though I'm not really a fan of the 50's vintage look either.

I have to apologize, the original footage seems to be WB'd way off...

original SLog3 footage:

I put the SGamut3.cine/SLog3 to LC_709_TypeA LUT from Sony on it and realized how much off this is.

I don't know if SGamut3.cine was used too. Maybe that's the issue here?

Then I made a quick cc to set the levels/channels where they belong:

Something like this should be your starting point. Primaries first!

Finally I put a subtle filmconvert look with some grain on top:

Hi Erik,
No need to apologise. It's a learning process.
However. actually you still need to take Cyan out of the highlights, unless of course it's an aesthetic choice.
The original SLOG material doesn't look that bad. Ok it's a little blue, but nothing that couldn't be corrected back to a very neutral image.
Personally, I think the LUT's you are applying are problematic. I have said this time and again. Often,it ends up being just as much work, if not more than if you simply corrected from the original SLOG file. I have yet to see a LUT that's worth it's salt for most SLOG image's and less work than CC'ing without one.

We don't know in which way the SLog was used. HE says in CineEI mode...

You should only use it with the proper color space which is S-Gamut3 or SGamut3.cine
which I like more.

I did a few grades here with original SGamut3.cine/SLog3 footage with the original Sony SLog3 LUTs
and they worked very well. The footage here has some nasty color shifting, which can be corrected
but it definitely needs more than a quick grade which I did.

It was for the purpose of showing that the footage seems to be a little weird...

In Erik's defense I don't think it's LUTs alone. Slog2 and 3 have a very weird tendency toward cyan and yellow. Slog3 less so, but it's one of the things I find very off putting. I don't know if this is purely a settings thing but at least with the FS7 footage I'm seeing shot cine mode it's there.

Possible to return to original SLOG? Frankly, I have see nothing but neutral, well balanced results from that one. SLOG3 has a very particular look to it. Feels like saturation has been tweaked up and thus more cross-overs are happening.
