Sleepwalker's Girl - DSLR short

Wow, that was... surprisingly engaging. I'm not usually into suspense, but this kept my attention throughout.

Was the flashing bulb a CFL on purpose? To make it appear that the flickering was imagined or something like that? Because CFLs don't do that in real life, if I'm not mistaken.

Appreciate the kind words M Gilden! Can't pretend CFLs were a purely aesthetic choice, though we did choose to play up their more "unique" characteristics; specifically flickering and colour cast. Flicker effect was augmented by jiggling the plug in the socket.

Thought the other was a fair comment. We did try to shape the light a bit, but really could have done more. Definitely an area we've been educating ourselves on in the meantime.

So, that CFL flicker was genuine? Interesting. Would have guessed you did that in post because of the way CFL's don't abruptly turn on, and sometimes "ghost" when turned off (as opposed to tungsten which can go "all on" to "all off" immediately).
...so I suppose I learned something new today. :)

Well it was mostly the jiggling. You can see that "ghost" effect from genuine CFL flicker in between the "all on" and "all off" pulses, which we like (gives the flickering a "shimmering" quality?) We had experimented with different shutter speeds to play it up but in order to really see it the motion got way too jerky.
