skip the tape

A buddy of mine heard you could record footage from a dvx onto an external device (like an external hard drive) instead of (maybe in addition to) recording footage to a tape (during production/the shoot).

Is this true? if so, what is the name of the device? It would be nice to skip the capture process if you could.

Thanks!

i should have looked before asking. i found it. kewl deal! that is awesome!

can you transfer the footage from the firestore to your comp?

No you can only watch it from the firestore and you cant do anything else with it.

Just kidding.
Of course you can transfer the footage to the comp, how else would you edit it?

hard drive

hard drive

someone just told me that you can do this with any hard drive. is that true? i find that hard to believe.

thx

No, it has to be a harddrive that will accept commands over firewire. I think there are others out there, but the firestore is the most popular.

It looks/sounds brilliant, but man..... it comes with a heafty price tag. There's a ton of equipment I'd rather buy at that price.

Alas.... tis the deal with film equipment. That dirty, and beautiful, four letter word (film) inflates the price tag of anything.... even tap water.

LOL

To be honest I was looking for a time saving solution to loading tapes. I hope that doesn't sound toooooo lazy. LOL

Joking aside my computer acts funny when I load tapes. It freezes a lot. Often I have to recapture footage because of a glitch in the capture process. It is very irritating. I've tried everything to get my computer to run better.

Regardless if I fixed the computer problem the thought of not loading tapes is still very tempting. =)

Oh

Oh

Oh, I forgot to mention this... batch capture is the main time there is a glitch. For some reason the footage is captured glitchy (it looks like the frame rate is off big time). If I do it manually it comes out fine. Hince why I suddenly hate capturing tapes.

Thx

quickstream

quickstream

I found a quickstream product that allows 6 hours of footage (aprox 120gb) for $800. Much-much more affordable! Thanks!

I just run my dvx straight into my computer through dvrack (now onlocation). Besides direct capture which saves tape heads in has built in waveform monitor, time lapse, animation controls etc etc etc.

Because of this one of my dvxs only has 12 hrs on the heads.

kewl

kewl

sounds kewl. that would prove most convenient when i'm shooting in my home. i'll need an alternative for location shoothing though.

thanks for the info. brilliant!

yeah

yeah

yeah! $2000 doesn't sound very reasonable, but it is what it is. I've found $800 alternatives. I'm planning on getting a second dvx for dual recording, so $800 a pop is much easier for me, considering I'll need 2 of them.

Thx!
