Skin tones on the af100

Regarding the canon color-
god help me but I just cannot get why people think the canon's skintones or
Color are attractive.. The minute I see canon footage I just pass..
Am I crazy?

Well it's clear you like green skin tone looking at your avatar :P Only kidding, but on a serious note, I like skin tones out of my 7D, but then again, I also have liked them out of my AF100. There are so many settings on the AF100, you can really dial in a wide variety of looks. I started by tweaking out my AF100 to match my 7D (since I am so familiar with the 7D) and then have been slowly tweaking out from there as I see what I like.

Since I record in camera, 8-bit, to me it is vitally important to get the look as much in camera as possible since the final output is bit-limited. This is why I think it is important for people to take a lot of time understanding what the settings do so that you can dial in exactly what you need. It is NOT going to be like shooting on a 10-bit camera.

Here's the last skin tone I got. Shot is a bit soft. The guy was moving around a lot and this is the grab the editor sent me. Project isn't done yet so thats why I didn't include a link to the video.

That looks nice Gardner. What are your in cam settings?

Hey thanks
Settings were
1080/24 5600k

Detail -5
V detail -7
Chroma +2
Chroma phase -2 (the diva was giving me magenta)
cine D
Norm 2

Coring +2
Master ped -3 (I've been at -2 but went to -3 to get closer to what the 2nd cam/GH13 was looking like)

Also, I'm going to try -5 and -5 on detail levels because sometimes I feel like -7 is soft for my taste.

I find that Divas are a bit more magenta, but did a shoot the other week with the AF and used a Diva as key and it was MUCH more magenta than normal. I ended up using a Chimera/1K as key for the rest of the interviews and it looked much more pleasing.

Nice, similar to my settings. Did you do any grading in that still or is it straight out of the camera?

Yeah divas are not my favorite for a number of reasons but we wanted to shoot daylight and the divas are what we had available.

nice,

I've been running tests like a fool lately in order to get ready for my new web series because i'm still struggling where best to expose skin to get the nicest results.

I put myself infront of my window and basically shifted exposure ever so slightly so that my skin juggled between IRE of high 30's to high 70's. There was about, if i recall ( didn't write anything down ) about a stop and a half of exposure change on the lens itself from the darkest to lightest. I find myself, for the first time, with the AF100, sometimes going in between exposures even if it's 1/3rd stop more or less to try and get things to look right. Tricky tricky. This is also a tough test because we are nearing the end of the pasty white skinned winter... With a tan, everything changes..

then that would be somewhere in between image 2 and 3 of my post ( counting from the top )

man im soo pasty right now..

My first couple shoots skewed magenta due to the onboard LCD bring so green, but once I started shooting with that in mind my skin tones have been just fine.

This was one of my first shoots in which I white balanced to grey card (key lit with daylight kinos) and dialed phase +2 as a result of using camera LCD for reference. As you can see, this was a mistake and I corrected the shot back in post. Original grab:

Here's a grab from a subsequent shoot lit with tungsten at 3200º preset.

No way....

I dial my chroma -2 right now. So far I am really happy with the color rendition at -2 compared to what I saw. And nice image content! :)

a nice tan like elton has also helps. Hard to get pasty white winter skin right.

The more I shoot, the more I realize preset 3200 and 5600K are your friends. Nice compositions, David. I take it you're loving the CP.2s?
