C100: Sketch Shot on Original C100

I know these cameras get a lot of love for documentary and event work, but let me say that THIS CAMERA IS PERFECT for low budget run n gun narrative work.

Even the 24Mbps bit rate grades exceptionally well (for what it is).

Here's the sketch:

We wrote it and shot it the same day, using only available light. It's no masterpiece, but we had a lot of fun making it!

Also, we up-res'd and exported it in 4K because youtube compresses it better.

Would love some feedback!

To me it has a feel and quality to a cable comedy show, very watchable and impressive to have shot in 1 day, the only thing that bothered me was some of the lighting, like the shadows when they first arrive back home, but def not a deal breaker! I’m a C100 user and they are still a plenty capable camera. Interesting you did a 4k uprez, I’ve never tried that before but maybe I’ll offer it to clients as a compromise (but even though some have asked about it, none have requested it yet,Sony cameras they have requested but not 4k lol)

IMHO, the C100 MKI was and is an underrated camera. A film I shot on mine in 2016 debuted at the SXSW Film Festival a few weeks ago and may be finding a home on HBO. Another documentary I shot last year with the C100 on a famous Brazilian musician that is supposed to finish up this year may be playing at several film festivals and is going to end up on on PBS and the BBC. FWIW, I shot both films using the Ninja Blade but still, the images look bascially the same as the internal recording, which is some of the best AVCHD codec implementation I've ever seen. People get all snobby about cameras but the C100 was just a special, solid, high quality, small and now cheap camera that just works. If I didn't need 4K occasionally, I would have kept my C100 and just kept trucking with it.

Thanks Barry!

Yeah the lighting makes me cringe whenever I watch it! Especially the shots in the car and the shots in the parking garage. But we gave ourselves that restriction on purpose so that we would focus on just shooting it.

We also just used a boom attached to the camera for sound. No sound guy.

Couldn't agree more with you!

Do you have a link to your work? Would love to check it out!

Great video. And yes, uprezing to 1440p or UHD makes your Youtube videos look better.

Thank you!

And yes, I saw a LinusTechTips video on it a while back where he compared the quality of youtube videos that were upres'd to 4k and ones that were just uploaded at the native 1080p.

Also, I think Philip Bloom has talked about it as well.

Cute.

How did you do the shots where the cam leads you while running? And the car hit person fx shot? Have similar ideas for a music video we’re planning.

Hey Josh,

For the leading shot while running, I sat in the back of my SUV with the trunk door open and the camera on a tripod. My wife drove the car very slowly. I was expecting to have to ADR it, but the MKH-416 picked up their voices just fine and it really didn't pick up the engine noise.

For the fx shot at the end, we just shot it in reverse. The guys laid on the hood of the car, we drove the car in reverse, and they jumped off at the mark that was around center frame. Then we just reverse it and sped it up in post. I also added motion blur to the car so that it wouldn't look so fake.

They haven't released a trailer yet for the C100 shot SXSW film, "Ali & Cavett: The Tale of the Tapes" but here the review from Variety http://variety.com/2018/film/festivals/ali-cavett-the-tale-of-the-tapes-review-1202723759/
The documentary on Brazilian musician Sergio Mendes I shot last year, mostly on the C100, is still in post, we are still waiting to shoot a couple of sequences with Sergio in the studio, recording his new album with Will i. Am https://www.billboard.com/articles/...sergio-mendes-documentary-new-album-exclusive
These are a series of dance tutorials I shot in Atlanta last year on the C200 for the YouTube RED series, "Step Up: High Water https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Step+Up+High+Water+Dance+Tutorials
This is a promo I shot two years ago with Lauren Graham for Netflix for the Gilmore Girls reboot with the C100 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zhCX5j_AC-8
I was going to link to the 30 minute BTS special that I shot in Morocco for Fox for Prison Break S5 called Resurrection, was all C100, but it appears that they took it down off of YouTube recently? I don't have the cut so I can't link to it.
A piece we shot with three C100s with actress Holly Robinson Peete about caring for her dad with Alzheimers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wAw9a9CYkM

The C100 is a great camera and will still be useful for years to come, IMO. Love the run-and-gun capability. I recommend to many folks I work with who are just starting off to spend the bulk of their startup money on glass and support HW and, if they need a camera body to use on their own on the regular, pick up a used C100. They're work horses, and footage still looks spectacular on them. Great for shorts, commercials, and doc work.

I feel like we've hit a point in camera tech where many of the cam bodies that have been released since ~2014 or 2015 can still potentially see useful life for many years. I remember using bolex motion picture cameras back in film school that were well over 30 years old and still getting the job done. There's no reason why future batches of film students couldn't be using a C100 in Production 301 a decade from now.

Nailed it. That's why I laugh and just shake my head that so many people get so up in arms about shooting and eventually delivering 8K, 12K, 16K and onward. The resolution race is so obviously designed to just sell people more gear that's not needed. It's all a ploy in planned obsolescence. Really, the current wave of HDR is too, although at least I believe more in the tangible benefits of HDR to the average audience as soon as that pipeline from camera to audience is in place. I know that the average person really cannot tell much difference between clean 720p versus 4K on a consumer TV so IMHO, even 4K is a kind of scam to sell more gear, I know it worked for me, I ditched my perfectly good C100 MKI for a C200 because we had just a couple of clients who immediately thought that they HAD to shoot everything in 4K. Both of those clients today are still requesting 1080 deliveries or their clients are requesting 1080 deliveries from them of 4K material I have shot for them. And most of this stuff we have shot in 4K has been disposable to semi disposable material, I shoot a lot of BTS and marketing content, it's mostly just viewed when a studio is pushing a TV show or feature, then it's forgotten about.

I am shooting my two documentaries in 4K and will deliver 4K masters, simply because of market demand, but personally I think 4K is just a successful scam to sell new gear, hardly anybody NEEDs 4k, they just think they want it because the marketing departments of various entranched interests have convinced them that they are a dinosaur if they are shooting, delivering or viewing 1080 content. I may be a victim of the marketing hype, but at least I am aware of it and it wasn't my choice at all.
