Size of P2 Cards

For those of us unwilling to purchase a 15-inch PowerBook with a cardbus slot, I'm looking at using some sort of reader to transfer the 4 Gb p2 cards to a desktop Mac or 12-inch PB.

Barry: the 4Gb cards use SD technology raided as I understand it. But can you use some sort of CF, or SD USB or firewire reader plugged into the USB or FW port for transfers?

I have a Lexmar CF firewire reader, and it is fast.

But do the P2 cards fit into something like this?

You'll need a cardbus/PCMCIA slot in order to read the cards.

However, if you leave the P2 card in the HVX, I believe you'll be able to copy the contents of the card to your mac by using the USB2 interface.

Neophase is right. Look for a PCMIA card reader that plugs in via USB or Firewire. Or just transfer directly from the camera itself.

I have PCMIA, but either way, I will be using the laptop to copy footage as well as burning DVDs for backup/security.

So I would need to Type II Cardbus reader, preferably firewire?

That would be correct?

The reason I'm clarifying this is because I see alot of Type II Compact Flash Card readers, and don't think that is the same thing.

Hence, the question about the size the P2 cards.

Then, I can copy to the internal drive of the PB on site, rotate the cards, and then transfer for editing using the firewire target mode.

Hi Baquqjim, what make and model is yur card reader? Does it work with a Powerbook 12"? and how much did it cost?

My laptop has one built in, I guess they don't have external ones as I am not finding them online. A Type II Compact Flash Reader is not the same thing.

David S. + 5ive- the easiest way to do it is via the firewire port. You would put the HVX into PC mode and transfer the footage over. From the brochure it looks like you need firewire to work with Mac. I believe PC is both USB 2.0 and firewire.

That looks like the only way you are going to be able to do it without PCMCIA.

The search phrase was "external pcmcia" considering a search for firewire pcmcia or usb pcmcia results in pcmcia cards that have those ports. I have an old iomega Click drive that would work as well. Although it only has USB 1.0 which would really SUCK. but if anyone wants to purchase it...

Here's one, but sheesh it's way overpriced for a PCMCIA card reader. I wonder why there are a thousand ones for laptops but hardly any for the desktop.

Desktops usually have PCI ports so there is no need for PCMCIA. It's just with these new fance P2 cards, are we suddenly wanting them. The market will produce one shortly after the release of the HVX. Other wise, the one I posted above has USB 2.0 and runs about $85

This one is interesting. Fiits in an empty 5.25 " bay
