Prompted by a question from LMGvideo a while back I have been looking into a good lightweight mic preamp to use with RedOne in single user mode. Mono is fine, limiter is essential, I would prefer it to be powered from the camera and be small/light enough to attach directly to the rig. The best option I have found so far is the Sound Devices MM-1. I assume that there are quite a few reservation holders who are going to be in the same boat, any ideas for other options, or thoughts on the MM-1.

Here is another option the PSC DV PROMIX 1 Isn't quite so pretty but it's quite a bit lighter and has a peak meter. Both just a bit too big though, I would love to find something smaller.

I have a PSC DV PROMIX 3, the big brother of the one you are looking at, and I am certainly very pleased with that. I have used it on a few doco shoots with my Z1, and had no problems. Obviously it's not a full SQN, and the meters are not brilliant, but it's a lot cheaper.

I would recommend splashing out for the extra channels if you can afford it, as you may often find yourself in a situation with a boom and a lapel mic, and the ability to run them to a camera via a mixer is very useful.

Good to hear about your positive experiences with the PROMIX 3 Nick. My only concern with running a larger mixer was when I need to use an on camera mic (an unfortunate neccessity sometimes). The ideal would be to have a very compact mic preamp that would mount on the camera in this situation. It would certainly make sense to have a larger mixer too.

Sound has not been mentioned much by Red at all. It may well be that if all you need is a simple top-mic setup then Red may have built in mic pre-amps and phantom power as traditional video camera do. Then you wouldn't need an external box.

Is this so RED? Does the camera have high quality built in mic pre's?

Now that would be handy, but I suspect it will just be line ins. I would be very happy if there were a couple of mic pres built in though. So far the only specs I have seen specify 4 channel uncompressed, 16 / 24 bit, 48KHz.
