Silica Gel?

Ouch...

Apparently I have seriously misjudged the number of people who need written instructions in the correct usage of silica gel, also known as a desiccant.

Silica, or silicon dioxide (SiO2), is the same material found in quartz. The gel form contains millions of tiny pores that can adsorb and hold moisture. Silica gel is essentially porous sand. Silica gel can adsorb about 40 percent of its weight in moisture and can take the relative humidity in a closed container down to about 40 percent.

Instructions for the correct operation of a silica gel pack:

Open case.
Place silica gel in case to be protected.
Close case.

Hopefully this clears up any misunderstandings over the operation of silica gel.

Now gossamer, in response to your questions about the correct usage of a microphone.

Generally, the big end is pointed in the direction of the "noise" or "voice" to be recorded. There is a long cable attached to one end, and it is plugged into something, that's the wrong end, follow the cable to the other end.

I also find that most people contain one entire mouth, not the 1/4 of a mouth you're referring to. Perhaps this will help you to correct the problems you're encountering with your recording.

Try it out and get back to me, if you're still having problems.

congratulations pookie. you have found the wonders of a google search.
however, next time please use quotation marks when straight ripping off the text of another site.

as written on Howstuffworks.com:

ouch is right... there is no need for such a smart guy as yourself to resort to plagiarism

Thats about the only thing you can say about us, except for the fact you have no idea how long we have been reading the site. Just because we don't post 6 times a day...doesn't mean we all aren't stedi-masters.

You people need to get a sense of humor. If you had been hanging around longer than 5 minutes you would know that Pookie is all in good fun as are most of us. God forbid alfini ask's what the click is; you'd have a pack of rabid dvx'ers chime in and none would have the answer he was seeking.

Lighten up and definately don't chime in with name calling and personal attacks.

Wow, I did not understand at the time that pookie telling me that I have no common sense and Mikko saying that I was a few sticks short for asking a question I thought was legitimate was “all in good fun.” I will admit that it kind of got to me at first. I think I understand how this “all in good fun” thing works around here now. I have a great sense of humor and would like to participate, that is if newbies are allowed to. So “all in good fun” would be the fact that I would rather not ever know what Silica gel did (even if I ended up ruining my camera because of it) than live the lonely existents pookie must live by living in this forum. Also I just went to Mikko’s website and “all in good fun” I would rather not ever know what Silica gel did than be responsible for any of the work (web and video) that I saw there. Just in case you guys get bent out of shape about this post I just want to state one more time that this is “all in good fun.”

Hey, was that a diss on my site? (not that I see any site of yours available for coment) ...just a tip: personal attacks here arn't a good idea.

..I do belive I was trying to convince Pookie to chill a little - the sticks missing coment was definatly not aimed at you (though if you wish to interperet it as such) there are many others in the past that I was refering to. - hell I've never used Silica Gel, and I certainly never stopped to consider where to put it, I could have asked the same thing.

That beeing said, if you rather we continue with the good fun; Pookie, disregard that PM I sent you asking you to lighten up a little...

Cool John,

Humour seems to be a lost art.....or lost dave or lost bill or lost harold or lost alfini or.....

Mikko....

While I respect John Hudson and Pookie and their contributions here, I just read this thread and I have to say Pookie was way out of line. His comments were aggressive and mean-spirited; definately not in good fun. I have seen and participated in the ribbing that goes on with the regs in here but that sort of un-warranted attack on someone looking for advice was neither in good humor or the attitude that I have come to appreciate at this site. It's not even as if he asked a question that could have been answered easily with the search function or some instruction booklet.

You can shrug if off as some of us not having a good sense of humor but if I was met with that attitude when I first arrived here I would not have stuck around. You can find that sort of high school bullie attitude anywhere on the internet, dvxuser has set itself apart from that bs. It's not helpful, it's not friendly, and it's not funny. (but seriously, good job ganging up on the new guy, bet he won't be stupid enough to show his face here again)

Politeness counts!

hugs pookie. lol apparently they dont know how easy it was . just having it in there mean it works thus it done. easiest job in the world.

OK, OK.. I think I almost got it.

So, where should you put it?

Should you put the gel in a sealed ziploc bag? I think it will last longer that way.

He he he.
