Silica Gel?

I just bought a pelican case for my audio equipment. I will be keeping a shotgun mic, cords, batteries, headphones and maybe some wireless mics someday. I bought one of these Pelican Desiccant Silica gel things. Do I really need this? If so where should I put it in my case? Do I cut an area out of the foam or should I put it under were you cant see it? Is there a certain distance I should keep this any from any certain items? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Pour it all over, it works best that way.

Good freakin'.....

It's a water tight case, and you want to know where to put silica?

Is common sense a lost genetic trait?

I didn’t pour it out, I was being sarcastic. Maybe it was a dumb question but I am new to this and I thought I would be safe and ask since I have never had a watertight case before. The gel came in a metal case it wasn’t just salt packets and the gel case was a pretty decent size considering the small case it was going in. I wanted to make sure that if it slid and ended up on my shotgun mic that it would not do damage to it. I am sorry I made pookie so mad I guess that I am just not good enough for his elite knowledge of silica gel. Sorry for asking a question I just thought that is what this forum is for. If someone can fill me in on what questions I should not ask I would appreciate it because I lack the lost genetic trait common sense.

Eh, don't take it too seriously. Maybe he makes a good lesson though. Take everything you read on the internet with a grain of salt (or silica:)) Honestly though, you bought silica? And Pelican sold it to you for their waterproof case? I leave the ones that came in my camera bag in there cuz I thought maybe it would help soak up some moisture, but will it really have a significant effect? I dunno. Good luck.

You have a watertight case....do you actually think it's important "where" you put a silica pack in a watertight case???

I dunno, lets say you are shooting in the rain, or on a foggy morning, then you seal that camera up inside the case for a day or two or a couple of weeks. All that moisture/humidity cannot be good for the camera.

Seems like the silica jel isn't such a bad idea.

I've got some, it couldn't hurt.

The point is not the watertight case, the point is, in a watertight case it doesn't matter IN THE SLIGHTEST where you put a silica pac in it. It's a sealed case, it's going to work ANYWHERE inside it.

This guy wants to know "where" to position a silica pac.

A little common sense needs to be applied by alfini.

This forum is a great resource, please don't ruin it by being a dick to people who want to know more. His question is no different than someone asking about where to clip a lav mic, if someone doesn't know something, they ask and get answers from people who know. If you think it's a stupid question, ignore it, no one said you have to answer every single post on the site. People come here to learn and you discourage them.

Q: Where should I aim a microphone when recording a voice?

A: (in a Pookiesque tone) It's a MOUTH. It's ALL making noise! DAMN, what an IDIOT. Get some common sense.

(of course there is the fact that each 1/4" of a mouth has a different sonic signature than the 1/4" right next to it)

And a lot less being an asshole could stand to be applied by Pookie.
