Silence - 9 minute short shot on DVX100a

Here's a short film I did last year here in Korea.

We were given a project in my Korean class to make a presentation, so I decided to shoot a short film instead and give a presentation about the making of the film. My teacher didn't really like it, but I think it's all right for something conceived, shot, and edited in two weeks.

I was lucky to work with an international crew, mostly Korean, Japanese and Chinese, and two good actors. This is kind of a prequel/side story to another project I'm working on at the moment, so if it feels a bit empty, it's not only because of budget reasons.

Shot 24p advance and edited with Final Cut Pro. The music was done beautifully by a friend of mine.

Let me know what you think:

That's a great short! I really liked it. Did your teacher say why he didn't like it?

It was a bit grainy in some scenes.

It wasn't for a film class, and it was expected I did some kind of presentation on some cultural item. Even though it was supposed to be a solo speech, my teacher thought I shouldn't have done everything by myself. I wrote, directed, shot, and edited it, so I actually ended up doing way more work than any of the other students.

The grain on some of the shots was definitely for effect. I worked a long time on color correction, and I tried to bump it up the grain on some of the shots.

Like I said, I have plans for the short in terms of fleshing out the background. Time and money is all. :)

I thought it was pretty good. At least I sat through the whole thing.
I really liked voice over parts. And the music was great.
Why didn't your teacher like it?

It's been a month or so, but I just wanted to bump this to see if I could get more feedback on this. What did you guys think about the camera work? Did the handheld bits work? I was trying to go for a really post-apocalyptic feel, but still wanted to keep things from graying out and feeling empty. I did a lot of work on the color correction in post to make the colors and grain really stand out.

The lighting near the end, while a bit odd was really done like that to heighten the tension of the moment. I think that the music fails to keep this bit up and is really the only part where I think it needs to be rescored. Still, the project is finally finished and work is being done on the second part now.

I start filming on another short next month, and it definitely won't be as stylized, but I've been thinking more and more about this shoot. It was shot in only three days (the main location was shot in only one, with the pickups on two other days) and I really did get a lot done on the shoot.
