Significant artifacting problem

Reviewing some footage shot with A1 recently in a hotel meeting room without windows. Camera was b-roll, thankfully, and pretty much hand-held. I'm not certain what f-stop the cam-op was at but it appears that any rather speedy moving shots -- swipes, readjustments, etc. -- result in major artifacting on the tape. Even zooms artifact. In fact, some really mild moves artifact.

Anybody encountered this before? Is it simply that the camera wasn't dialed in for lower light conditions?

All input welcome.

Have you ever cleaned the tape heads? doesn't sound like it has much to do with your aperture or light situation, more of a codec or tape thing

I'd say the A1 was shooting at 30fps and the moving shots are blurred.

More light needed in a situation like that ... get housekeeping to bring in a half dozen or more hotel 100W stand lights and point them up at the ceiling and walls.

Experiment to get an even light over the room and carry an Expodisc to get the correct white balance.

Cheers.

All good input and appreciated. Did have 1K softboxes in the room to offset the typical blase hotel lighting so am convinced that that is not the issue -- primarily due to the fact that the A-cam footage is also artifacting badly. My conclusion? Bad box of tapes (Sony, where I usually use Panasonic).

I've heard it happens, just never encountered it.

If you switch tape brands shouldn't you also clean the head before use? I have never switched brands before, but noticed lots of users having problems when they do.
