Sigma fp

Howevah - the DJI LiDAR based AF is getting solid reviews and the nicest thing about the LiDAR AF is that the transitions - they are not pulls even - are super slow and super smooth. Of course, one would need to buy a DJI gimbal too but there are other systems on the way also. For video, one might even go with a manual and a long focus throw. And that brings all the Chinese knock-offs of the classic German glass into play. Plus, the anamorphic as a side benefit.

yeah but lidar needs to be distance calibrated with your lens, and you get no eye/face/subject tracking. boo

Personally, I’d love to have a tiny, manual, simple personal camera for both stills and video.

The first fp was almost great, but had some serious issues like crummy rolling shutter and mediocre DR from no log. If this new model fixes those and other issues, I’ll definitely pick one up.

And I’d be fine using my EF lenses with an adapter.

I own already the camera you want. It's a Canon R5 :)
Not too tiny but with a lot of other benefits like outstanding AF
No EF adapter necessary

Supposedly will have a low pass filter, according to our favorite Name-Censored site. Which suggests they do line-skip for video.

Just adding a link and the quote about the specs:

https://www.l-rumors.com/confimed-sigma-fp-l-specs/

"Nokishita confirmed our previous specs with the following tweet:

The changes from fp of Sigma “fp L” are “Equipped with effective approximately 61 million pixels back-illuminated Bayer sensor” “Equipped with a low-pass filter that suppresses the occurrence of moire to the minimum” “Contrast AF + image plane phase difference AF” ” It seems that it supports USB power supply.

New functions “0.5 type external EVF with about 3.68 million dots”, “save / read settings / QR code share”, “new color mode” powder blue “/” duotone “”, “various frames used in video production” “Compatible with rate” and “Screenshot function” will be supported by upgrading fp.

The mass retailer price of the Sigma “fp L” is 275,000 yen including body tax and 330,000 yen including EVF kit tax. The mass retailer price of “EVF-11” seems to be 66,000 yen including tax."

Sony A7RIV has a line-skipping 4K (it also has a center crop 4K), so skips approximately two out of three lines (how's my math? .. how am I driving?). They could do 6K-into-4K downsampling, thereby halving the "garbage out" ratio but they probably won't. And Sigma could do the 4K APS-C center crop a la A7RIV too. But they probably won't.

Off old reviews, A7RIV full frame 4K was pretty soft. But that's a two year old, stills geared model.

The reason I brought up A7RIV is because it's probably the same sensor with a different CFA.

Actually missed the tweet's text since it's in Japanese, but I just noticed the numbers in it, and the tweet is basically saying (after I translated it) that it's a 4K/30p camera with digital image stabilization (presumably meaning no IBIS).

Presumably meaning it's indeed a dud for video (with all of the better specs most likely available externally again).

If it's a dud for video but does stills well with a few more combined phase + contrast points for a reasonable AF performance, it probably means that both Sony and Canon (and probably Nikon as well) are getting close to another jump in stills resolution. Canon has been rumored for an 80 MPX. Sony will try to outjump them into ... eh, 100 MPX territory.

Either way, it looks like another step up in performance. The announcement is at 8 AM. The YouTubers should be out with their clips by 10 or so.

Canon is rumored for >100MP next

but even if it's limited to 4k30p and has no ibis, it doesn't mean it's a dud for video if it has >=P6k IQ

The full camera specs have been posted on the Sigma Sweden website. Some highlights:

- 61 MP back-illuminated bayer sensor
- internal recording only up to UHD
- CinemaDNG, 8-bit, 10-bit and 12-bit (up to UHD 30fps) internal and external
- ProRes RAW, 12-bit (up to DCI 4K 24fps, up to UHD 30fps ) for external RAW recording
- BRAW, 12-bit (up to DCI 4K 24fps, up to UHD 30fps) for external RAW recording
- still no mention of a log recording option
- hybrid autofocus: contrast AF and phase-detection AF

Some sensor info:

"61 megapixels. The highest resolution presented by SIGMA. Leveraging our know how of image processing technology on Foveon sensors. Thanks to the ultra-high resolution, SIGMA fp L is able to unleash your imagination and feature a low-pass filter to make a further contribution to the optical performance."

"The SIGMA fp L features a Bayer sensor with approximately 61 effective megapixels, higher than any other SIGMA camera before it. In addition to images with fine details, the fp L is capable of creating images that are high-definition and rich in color, thanks to its ultra-high pixel count and SIGMA's experience in developing cameras with a Foveon sensor, are renowned for both the exceptional resolving power and nuanced color gradients due to the unique nature of the X3 sensor. Furthermore, for its image quality that are in principle free of color artifacts, the Foveon sensor legacy was also behind the decision that the fp L should have a low-pass filter to reduce moiré to minimum levels. The use of a low-pass filter was a choice that made sense for a camera with an ample megapixels such as the SIGMA fp"

B&H has full specs. Sigma itself is lagging.

Internal 4K is H264 8-bit 4:2:2.

And, as of this moment, there are some spec inconsistencies - Sigma states it has both CD and PD auto focus; B&H lists only 49 PD points.

Presuming some footage comes out shortly, fp L is photo first, Sony crippled second. If photo does OK, it's a decent buy. They advertise its external Raw capabilities without mentioning the line-skip.

I guess we will know soon, but Sigma Photo website also lists both CD and PD autofocus. Not necessarily sure how good it is compared to the Sony/Canons:

https://www.sigmaphoto.com/sigma-fpl

"In addition to high-precision contrast AF, the SIGMA fp L features fast image plane phase-detection AF. This hybrid AF allows users to enjoy smooth autofocus that is high-precision, fast, and excellent at tracking a moving subject, whether they are shooting stills or video."

The Sigma Photo link above also lists the fp-L and the fp below to show that there is a difference in autofocus capabilities:

fp L - A big canvas for big moments
Back-illuminated 35mm full size effective approx. 61 megapixels Bayer sensor
Contrast detection autofocus + Phase detection autofocus
Supports USB power supply

fp - A small camera for a big freedom
Back-illuminated 35mm full size effective approx. 24.6 megapixels Bayer sensor
Contrast autofocus
The original "World's smallest and lightest full-frame mirrorless"

Reading CineD's review and the EVF-11 completely blocks the HDMI port and has no HDMI output, so only internal recording can be performed while the EVF-11 is attached. That's a another major fail and kind of hilarious:

"Unfortunately there is NO HDMI output on the EVF. This leaves us with the possibility to record only in Cinema DNG (And MOV of course)."
