C100: Sigma 18-35mm f1.8

I am very wary of this lens as I rented the 35mm f1.4 a bit ago to test out and HATED it. Sharp but thats about it. Sterile image to me, and I just couldn't deal with the focusing ring. Was so hard for me to pull focus with it that it made it unusable. It had a very short throw and turned very oddly. It wasn't dampened but not loose, it just kinda chunked along, hard to describe. Was not impressed.

Is that compared to a Zeiss or to Canon lenses? I found the 18-35 to be not as good as a proper manual Zeiss but better than the looser Canon rings. I have not tried the 35mm 1.4 though and I'm not sure if it'll feel worse over time. A rental lens might also have had a very hard life so I don't know if I'd think too much on it based on that.

Lot of Epic owners are scarfing these up as they like the way they look on their cameras. I may have to pick one up for the C100.

Just got mine today. I'm impressed. Feels very well
made. Much much better than most still lenses for
shooting video. Smooth zoom and focus rings and nice
focus throw. This is one of the best lenses I've bought,
it seems custom made for us video shooters. I really
wish all still lenses were made like this. Full review and
footage on my blog soon.

how does it render colors? similar to the canon look?

I'd say similar, not quite the same. It looks good though and it has a close minimum focus
distance....not a macro but still pretty nice. I wanted something fast and wide....
the best I could find was a 24mm F1.4. This is close to that and gives you a 18, 28,
and 35 besides. Have you ever seen a 18mm F1.8 before? I haven't and this gives
you that and more.

Would say it's actually far away from the Canon look if you consider color cast. The Sigma is neutral, and pretty honest about colors outside of reds (which I find strange), Canon glass always seems to lean warm to me and if you put the two side by side, mixed lighting, you can see daylight values in Canon glass go warm, where as the Sigma remains accurate.

This was just for people that were interested in the lens so it's absolutely just random footage, please consider it as such. At the linked time the lens used is the canon 70-200/2.8, at 1:01 it's the Sigma 18-35.

I believe the base is there on the Sigma to match it with Canon glass, especially the 70-200/2.8 which was my primary concern. Feels like the Sigma needs mids warmed for the most part.

How do you upload 1080p to vimeo so it plays back as 1080?

Upload a 1080 file then, if you are a VimeoPRO account holder, after it's up you go to the video options and select 1080.

I did a test with the Sigma 18-35 and found it to hold focus while zooming. Like all lenses you need set the focus at the longest length. For the Sigma it's 35mm. I saw a test on a Blackmagic Cinema Camera and it didn't appear to be parfocal but my test shows otherwise.

I've been suspicious that some of the non-parfocal claims might be coming from folks who set focus wide and expect it to hold while zooming close. "Zoom in and focus" was a cliche for us back in the ENG days.
