Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 on FS700+SB

Just got my Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 lens, and to my surprise the lens circle has enough coverage to work with my FS700 with Metabones Speedbooster from 24-35mm! (hard vignetting 18-21mm, dark soft vignetting 21-24mm, 21mm should be ok for 2.40:1) That means it's a real 16-24mm f1.3 S35 zoom on my FS700+SB... and I thought an f1.8 zoom was already impressive!

BTW I pre-ordered mine from Samy's Camera and they shipped it last week. I just received it today and did a few tests, seems quite sharp wide open, and the round aperture seems to stay pretty consistent through the range. Fits in very well with my whole set of lenses which are pretty much all Sigma (I really like the look and performance of Sigma compared to most other still lens manufacturers, now I have one more reason to like them).

I've been interested in this lens since I heard it was going to be released. I must have missed that this was not a full framed lens. I am happy to hear that the quality is good.

Those specs in a full frame would be pretty ridiculous. But yeah it is only marketed as covering APS-C and has the "DC" Sigma designation which implies it's designed for APS-C. The idea is that at 18-35mm f1.8 on APS-C it should give essentially the same FOV?DOF performance that you would get from a 28-56mm f2.8 lens on a Full Frame 35mm body. Anyway the large image circle of this lens is pretty impressive even if it is not Full Frame, since it means it will definitely work on >S35 sensors like RED MX at 5K or the upcoming DRAGON at 6k. It should also work quite well on <S35 bodies with speedbooster/focalreducers, for example this is a perfect lens to combine with a MFT (GH2/GH3/BMCC) camera and a focal reducer since it will likely work well as a 12-24mm f1.3 without vignetting.

I would say about as parfocal as still zooms get. I did a quick test and it seemed parfocal for practical purposes, but was not perfect, but I've never seen a still lens that was perfectly parfocal... even lenses I've heard people call parfocal never seem to be exactly so. Also I suppose I should test without seedbooster since it's possible it may have some effect on focusing.

DOF performance that you would get from a 28-56mm f2.8 lens on a Full Frame 35mm body...
On Sony FS-700 in 16:9 Aspect Ratio it will be equivalent as 27.4 - 53.3mm .. so seems not bad for me... a specially if I get it in Sony A-mount and will have an aperture control and focus confirmation with it...
Personally I don't see any reason to use Metabones Speed Buster with it from 24 to 35mm ...
and 18mm actually create good angle for FS-700, and for extra-wide I would prefer to get Sony 10-18mm F4 OSS lens as it have Stabilization & good Geometry (!!) and any "fast" aperture do not give you really narrow DOF on that angles...

all taken from the same point.. and I like Rokinon Cine Prime lenses - will get all of them probably :) ... so as fast ZOOM this Sigma 18-35 F1.8 will be the best as it is ..
and good set of zooms looks this way for me:

1. 10-18mm F4 Sony
2. 18-35 F1.8 Sigma
3. 24-70 F2.8 Canon or Sigma
5. 70-200 F2.8 Canon IS, Mark II

(... and probably 120-300 F2.8 Sigma for wildlife ... :) )

Becoming very interested in this lens!

Right now, i've got a SAL16502.8 that i use with the LA-EA2 adapter when i need extra fast AF for video. I like that lens, but there's quite a bit of distortion. The Sigma seems to have less distortion, and is faster of course. I only wonder if the AF is as fast as the SAL1650.

So what's focus throw like on it? Does it have hard stops?

Specs seem very nice, i wonder if they'll do an e mount version (if that's even possible)

cheers
Paul

with the electronic follow focus both the focus throw and hard stops are irrelevant- the FF takes care of it;)

There is mine (surprise, surprise) but really it's your, the customer job to push the manufacturers for utilizing the wonderful tech in these lenses and offer them (the EFF that is)
If we, a small company can do it, the manufacturers with their army of engineers should crank these out in no time. But since everyone is stuck in the past on mechanical ff, motors, gears, etc. how are they (the manufacturers) to know?

Quite difficult to find information about your one (unless i'm looking at the wrong website)

I do believe the next big thing is electronic focusing, although you can usual tell a focus move from a human vs a machine!

Can you point me in the right direction?

thanks
Paul

Hello folks,

Just a few words to say that I've ordered mine too !

Can't wait to test it on my FS700...

Regarding the Optitek, you mean that you're planing an electronic EF to e-mount adapter with wireless focus capabilities ? That would be awesome ! (but it means we have to sell our Metabones :( )

Paul email me at jacek2@optitek.org and I'l send you the info.
I'm not a sponsor here.
The EFF is fully manual like the mechanical counter part.
The difference is "drive by wire" so instead of hooking up motors, gears and all the other mess you just plug in one cable.
Very simple and clean.
We also take care of the rotation (full turn for any lens), hard stops, image stabilization on lenses so equipped, wireless control for steadicam and such, etc, etc...

Sure, NP.
For my kind of corp shooting I could leave this on 75% of the time.

Canon 24-105
Canon 70-200
Rok Cin 85

Done!
