GH2 Sigma 18-35mm and Metabones adapter

Will this lens work on the GH2 with the new EF to m4/3 metabones adapter? If so what is the focal range one can expect on the GH2?

I thought the metabones was aimed at full frame lenses? This Sigma is only for crop sensors i believe?
My understanding is it's a zoom for 35mm cameras (maybe I should say full frame) and the adapter will allow it to be mounted to micro 4/3 cameras, including the GH2. It's a beautifully made lens, the focus and zoom have just the right amount of stiffness, not at all like the Panny zooms which feel like crap (I own both the 12-35 and 35-100). On the other hand, the Sigma is heavy as hell, which is why when I buy a fast lens for my system, it's going to be a fixed focal length, either one of the Noktons or the upcoming Leica 42.5mm.

1. It's not a full-frame lens - it's made for APS sized sensors
2. With the Speedbooster, some APS-type lenses cover the m43 sensor fully, others have slight vignetting or corner softening
3. There's a link in the NEX forum from a fellow who used one with his SpeedBooster on FS700 (an APS-sized sensor camera) and got full coverage from ~21-35mm

My educated guess would be that it may work well with the SpeedBooster.

Yes, here is the post:

He put the speedbooster-mounted sigma on his FS700 and claims the image circle is a bit wider than APS-C, so there is no vignetting on the wider end of the zoom.

But here's the thing about speedboosters on M4/3: you don't go full frame, but rather 0.7x wider. I haven't had the pleasure of using one myself, but according to this chart floating around the net, m4/3 with a speedbooster makes the image circle about APS-C sized:

To be honest, I was drooling for a speedbooster back when I thought it could make an m43 sensor full frame sized, or at least close to it. But as you can see on the bottom row, the DX image circle (which is APSC) still fits within the borders of the m43 window. But hey, what can you do?

Meanwhile, here's the bit that I'm wondering regarding that Sigma + GH2:
If the GH2's famously mutli-aspect ratio sensor goes a bit wider in video mode than other M4/3 sensors, where does it fit on this chart? Does it go wider and start to vignette? And where does the Sigma's image circle fit in, if that user claims it to be slightly wider than APSC?
Someone needs to have these equipment handy to test- I'm very curious.

The speedbooster (at a .71x crop) would turn the GH2 (1.86x crop) into a 1.32x crop camera (roughly APS-H size), and the GH3 or other "normal" m43 cams (2x crop) into 1.42x crop cameras (between APS-C and APS-H). So either way you're still going wider than APS-C/s35.

That's the impression I was originally given as well. But lately I've been seeing some conflicting information on the web, including that chart I posted above. I think there's also been a lot of rounding up/down of numbers which is throwing everyone's perception off of what it is and isn't (Nex5 + speedbooster was close to the FOV of a 5D, but not exactly, etc).

The bottom line is that I'd love to see some more information and possibly even tests of APS-C lenses on a speedbooster. I wonder how it will fare in the real world.

Thanks fo the info guys. So basically what you're saying is that it should theoretically work and if so it should maintain its wide angle properties that it has on the Canon APS-C cameras?

If so that's awesome and would be a great lens/adapter combo for m4/3.

It technically *could*, but only someone who has access to this equipment could say for sure.

I'll be finding out the minute I can rent one, because it should nicely displace 4 primes in a kit.

what I can definitively say about the above chart is that it isn't definitive. Some DX lenses cover more, some cover less (as verified by testing). Nikon 18-200 and 16-85 zooms vignette on GH2 through the range when used with SB; Sigma 10-20 and 50-150, Nikon 17-55, 35/1.8, and others give complete coverage on the GH2+SB. This question is going to be a "test and see" just like all those C-mount lenses many of us tried to adapt to m43.

As has been stated, the Speedbooster gives a GH3 a crop factor of 1.4. The GH2 would be around 1.3 and some APS-C lenses may not completely cover the GH2'a Mult Aspect sensor.

I don't know why people are disappointed that the 1.4 crop factor is still not 'Full Frame'. The Canon 1Dx is the king of the Canon hill and it has a crop factor of 1.3. I'd happily shoot with a 1D!

I've heard that too, and I'm inclined to lean towards that as being from more reliable sources. Still, I'd like to see some sample shots compared across the camera bodies mentioned here.

And you could use the same argument that standard cinema sensor size is still closer to APS-C, so who needs more than that anyway?
I think for most people, its the idea that there is some of this image circle going to waste. It could be wider, it could have that almost vista-vision sized DOF, I bought lenses that are designed to cover at least a full frame, and gosh darn it I want to know I can utilize it to the fullest! ;)
