Sig 30mm cheapy

Do you mean the Sigma 30mm 1.4? Here's a review we did recently of it (Canon mount version), click "CC" for english subs

Its a good lens and a bargain at $200. Doesn't seem like many are using it for video, check Flickr its very sharp across the frame and very nice rendering. I had one briefly and I liked the results, only sold it because I got a great offer for it when I sold my Nex7. If I didn't have that FL covered by the excellent Alpha 16-50/2.8, I would have another one. Still considering getting one to just leave on my 5n, but 35mm is my preferred walkaround FOV and this one is just a tad too long.

Why choose the Sigma over the Sony? Price or Sigma much better?

I had the Sony and thought it was quite a reasonable lens and has macro focus too. I got some amazing snail close ups with it.

I did use it on a job and shot some VFX plates with it and didn't need to worry about lens distortion it was so low. Loved the focal length too.

no real preference, but for $199 can't really go wrong. I'm not really a fan of the fine sony manual focus system though....not to mention 3.5 vs 2.8

I have the Sigma 30mm 2.8 E Mount and enjoy it. I'm no pro, but i like the contrast and it seems pretty sharp to me even at 2.8. I haven't tested light fall off and all that, but i like the look of it vs. the kit lens at 30mm.

I have had one issue with the auto-focus system. A couple of times when switching between auto focus and manual focus on the camera, the lens would seem to get stuck in between and do neither. Loud clicking noises! I'd have to turn the camera off for it to reset.

Haven't heard of anyone else having that problem, so maybe my copy is faulty. Or my noobiness was the actual issue. Just a heads up though!

I used it on a corporate shoot together with the Sigma 19mm 2.8 E-mount and the Sony 18-200 kit lens (the shoot was done 95% on the kit)

Pros: cheap fast prime, acceptable image (client liked), auto iris/push focus, tiny and light
Cons: noisy focus, can occasionally freeze the FS100 (battery out-in solves freeze)

Unfortunately yes.

I didn’t touch the focus ring, I just used one push auto focus before each shot (which worked well, although noisy).

I was doing some research and came across this Rok 35mm...... Hmmm...... I have the standard Rok 35 and 85 and love them both, but was wondering if this might have some advantages over the standard that would justify the purchase.

Rokinon 35 Cine glass

Cine gears, T-stops and stepless aperture are the only differences IIRC. Its a pretty good lens and a great value, but dramatically different from the Sigma 30. Its a huge chunk of glass and all manual.

I had the Sigma 30 f/2.8 on my NEX-7 but never really used it on my FS100 for video. On the NEX-7 I did not notice any noise when focusing. In fact I remember it being basically silent.

Occasionally my copy would also get stuck between manual focus and auto. No way to focus properly. Probably happened once every 3 days of use or something. Each time I had to remove it from the NEX-7 and reattach it to fix it.

But I'd say it's definitely worth $200. It's a great lens to carry around. I sold it only because Sony is coming up with the SEL30f18 *stabilized*.
