I nearly had a heart attack yesterday- I went to prep my new C300 for a shoot, and when I turned on the camera, none of the buttons worked! I tried removing the LCD, swapping batteries, cards, lens, nothing worked. The ND buttons functioned, and the F-stop wheel worked, but no other button did anything. I called tech support, and they were very helpful. Walked me through the same steps I'd taken, and then we did a hard-reset with a paperclip in the small reset hole on the back of the camera. No dice. The guy at Canon decided it must be broken, sent me a Fedex overnight shipping label, and gave me instructions to send it in- just the body, nothing else. Just before I put it in the box, I decided to give it one more try and it worked! Then I started thinking- the only difference was that I removed the side handle. Sure enough, when I plugged it back in, I noticed the cable goes in a little further than before, and now everything is just fine. Classic operator error. (Or an air-gap in the cable)
Overall very good support from Canon, just wish they would have added "check the side handle cable connection" (you idiot) to the list of troubleshooting steps. I called them back and they said they'd add it to the support database. I figured I'd post my story here so hopefully someone else can avoid that moment of panic when your brand new camera seems broken.
