Side-by-side shotgun shootout (w/samples from multiple mics)

This link has been posted many times. The problem is it keeps getting buried over time. It would be great if a moderator would get some stickies in there. :)

Anyone that visits the DVfreelancer link should post a "thanks" for those soundfiles... Those guys over at that site would love to have a following that is HALF as good as DVXuser... and I sometimes get the feeling that they don't get much love over there.

Bryan Beasleigh authored much of what is linked too... and he's damn serious about sound himself. He's got a VX2000 but he got the Greg Winter mod and he runs 302 (and sometimes Mixpre) with Schoeps, MKH-60, and some other high-end mics.

He's the one that showed me the light a couple (few?) years ago... so say "thanks" to Bryan when you visit that link.

Ty, we really appreciate your contributions also... these audible tests say SO much more then unsubstantiated opinions.

The only reason I say to give Bryan his props is 'cause he's just a regular guy like many of us here... I think of him like an older brother (I'd say "father" but he'd hate that)... Anyone obsessed with sound with the drive to teach others is a friend of mine.

Maybe it was just me, but for both the AT4073a and the 416, the sound was a little buzzy. Like they were talking with a kazoo in front of their face.

It just didn't have that affect like, "I'm hearing someone talk" like I do when I go to the movies. It was more like, "I'm hearing someone talk through a good microphone."

Did the guy just calibrate it wrong or something?

i did that shootout and watched your videos Guy. thanks, thats a great service to offer, and it would be great to see even more tutorials like these!

Wow that last link from DVe is instrumental in my decision to buy a shotgun mic. Think for the price I like the Rode NTG-1/2. Is it me or were there an excess amount of silibants in those test? Shouldn't the of pointed the mics around the throat area to avoid that?
Either way That was very helpful.

Just out of curiosity, how do the budget shotguns like the Azden SGMs, or even the AT815, stack up to the pretty standard ME66? Looking for something in the $200 or less range, to replace my ATR55.

Hey,

I loved being able to see video with these mic tests. It would have been good however, since these are mostly shotguns, to have mic placement above at the classic 45 degree angel down to the mouth. This would have helped reduce sibilance as well.

I'd love to see more of these with lav mics and various wireless systems.

Cheers,

Anyone know of a good place to hear sound samples of various mics unders different conditions. Much of the ones in the original post are no longer working.

My 2 Cents

Obviously, we'd all love the Sennheiser MKH 416, but when it's a 600-700 dollar difference between that and the classic ME66 / K6, it means a big sacrifice in money that could be spent on other gear (tripod, lights, jib/crane or dolly), not to mention those precious living expenses... :)

To my ears, the Sennheisers are superior in every way. They seem the most balanced, articulate, and are easily the least noisy. I was actually very surprised in the subtle differences between the MKH 416 and the ME66/K6! There was a bit of sibilance boost in the MKH, and obviously it can be used from farther away, but it's obvious why the ME66 / K6 is a favorite, it sounds great and is very wallet-friendly. I've made my choice.

Have you changed your mind ? Did you buy the sennheiser yet? If not I have a set that I am selling (about to post on ebay) ME 66, ME 64, ME 62. Still brand new. All of them in a hard case for $650.
