Here is also http://dvestore.com/theatre/mics_guide.html

Audio Technica AT897
RODE NTG-2
Sennheiser MKH-416
Sennheiser ME-66/K6
Audio Technica AT4073A
RODE NT3 Hyper
RODE Videomic

All recorded to a stock Canon XL-2 in the same studio, same day, same 20' AT XLR cable.

K, I REALLY cannot tell that much of a difference between these mics. And one of them is over a grand!!! Im thinking that maybe I don't know what I am supposed to be listening for. Pointers?:violent5: (i just wanted to put this here)

Depends on what you're listening to them with. With typical computer monitors they all sound pretty much the same. Switch to a decent audio interface instead of a typical consumer soundcard and a pair of professional monitors or high quality headphones and the differences become very apparent.

That link doesn't seem to work any longer?

I get a 404 when I click on the link on page one. Is there a more current link? Is it the same article as linked to in the post above this one by yeehawnow?

Thank for posting...After checking the DVE Store site shootout, I just ordered my Rode NTG-2 and now feel very informed and good about it. Like most video guys... audio is my weak hand.

One thing, I think, that is lacking from that "shootout" is the mention (and it's an important one) that the higher-end Sennheisers (416 and MKH-60) are RF condenser mics.

I don't think (but am not sure) if any of the others are. I also noticed the Neumann KMR-81 and Schoeps CMIT-5 are absent - but neither are RF condensers - so why am I bringing that up?

Ultimately, the advantage rf mics provide you is the abilitiy to work in environments where other microphones will have issues, say very humid environments like a rainforest. It also means that you don't have to worry much about them and they do have a proven track record of reliability. I have only seen 1 sennheiser rf condensor fail in many years.

It might not be important for everyone, but it's something to keep in mind.
