Shuttle Launch, record it in 720 60p or 1080 30p?

If you conform 30p to 24p you'll get that nice slight slow effect.

What's an example of the "slight" slowmo? Of all the slow motion I've been shooting I always do it 720p 60fps and then put it on a 24p timeline and slow it to 50%

Do you know of any good examples of 1080p 30fps slow mo? This is interesting as I've always avoided that framerate and done either 1080 24 or 720 60

If that's the workflow you're using, you're not getting the best results. 60p on a 24p timeline should be slowed to 40%, not 50%. You slow it to 50% when putting 60p onto a 30p timeline (30 being 50% of 60, whereas 24 is 40% of 60).

Hi everyone! I have been invited to shoot the next shuttle launch at Cape Canaveral and I am super excited about it! (Only 3 left) Though I have been trying to decide what format I should record in using my 7D. After watching other launch videos posted on the internet, I am not sure If I would benefit more from the extra frame rate of 720 60p or the size/resolution of 1080 30p. I have a looong lens set up, and a nice hefty tripod for smooth moves (hope I can steadily follow it up...)

Have any of you been to a shuttle launch? Any pointers? What format would you record it in?

Hey did you film the last shuttle launch? I wasn't able to. Next shuttle launch let me know if you want to go out and film it. I live out in Cape Canaveral and we can use my T2i as a second camera.

You can use a 24p timeline, but you should slow your footage to 40% like Barry said.

50% if you're working in a 30p timeline.

Ok, now back to the original question. What would 1080 30p look like with the "slight" slow motion effect? What timeline would you put this footage on? and what would you slow it to?

Those two videos were 60p in a 24p time line slowed to 40% of original speed. Also remember anything shot with 60p will need chroma blurring to diffuse the moire.

Sorry for slightly hijacking -- Chroma blurring, can you explain how you do this?

Well, it'd look like slightly slow motion. Not massively slow, just somewhat slow.

What timeline would you put this footage on? and what would you slow it to?
Put 1080/30p footage on a 1080/24p timeline, and play it back at 80% speed, to get frame-accurate slow-mo.
