Shutterspeed help.

I am making a tv spot for a school to play in there announcements,

I figured my workflow would be a 720p30 setup with 60fps for flycam and slow mo.

I'm running into an issue though.

@ 1/125 for 60p, I'm getting hellatious florescent light flicker.
And @ 1/60 for 30p I'm getting a slow discolored banding.

I tried checking 24p @ 30,40,50,60,80,100, & 125 shutterspeeds and it's even worse in 24p.

Can I get some suggestions?

Set your shutter at 1/60 and leave it there. The electrical system here in the States operates at 60Hz, and CMOS imagers will see that unless the frame rate is set to match.

That should keep the discolored banding at bay. Not sure why you're still seeing the issue, unless the lights are getting old and need to be replaced. Florescent lights tend to get really shaky (visibly to the naked eye), with terrible color shifts, when they get close to dying. Perhaps Barry Green will lend some wisdom there.

Also, is there a reason you're wanting to shoot in 720p? I know that is necessary for shooting 60p for slow-mo, but why not keep the rest at 1080p and scale the footage down later? Shooting in 720p can be a real pain with DSLR. Which camera, by the way?

+1 for everything c2v said (both shutter speed and resolution)

plus: if you're on PAL land, make that 50Hz and 1/50s shutter

I'm shooting with a Hacked Gh1... reason that I chose 720p30 as the main workflow with 720p60 for ramp and slowmo, is because it's target is DVD and internet (possibly broadcast if it gets enough feedback).

I haven't actually worked with a 24p timeline with 720p60 ramp/slowmo yet, so I'm unsure of the workflow. I know what I would need to do to work in a 30p timeline and what to do when I'm mixing 60p footage. Just feel comfortable... unless you can give me a quick FCP workflow rundown. why is shooting @ 720p a pain for DSLR, it seems to handle fast action a lot better than 1080p in my experience.

I believe you are spot on with why I'm still getting discolored banding from the florescent lights. They are old tubes and since it is in a photo studio, the modeling lamps give off enough light that they don't really care if the ceiling lights are going out.
