Shutter Speeds still confused!

Can anyone give any examples on when to use shutter speeds. I have the DVX book but I'm still a little confused on what settings to use when doing a project. For instance I'm filming a Rodeo this weekend what shutter speed should I be using to get the best quality? Can anyone give any other examples of shutter speeds? Skateboarding clips, music videos, weddings? How do you know what shutter speed to use? Thanks for the help!!:huh:
 
Well it will depend on your lighting conditions as well as what you're shooting. When I film skateboarding, I always shoot 30p 1/250 shutter speed. The general rule however is to set your shutter speed twice the frames recorded. So 24p - 1/48 shutter speed; 30p and 60i - 1/60 shutter speed. 1/60 for 60i because technically, 60i is still 30fps, just 60 half-fields every second.w If you are shooting a rodeo, I would go either 60i or 30p and go 1/250 shutter speed since it is fast moving.
 
When shooting 24p (or 25p) don't go lower than 1/48 (or 1/50).
1/48 will give you a very nice motion blur.
While going lower makes the footage look very "videoish".

For slowmotion and when shooting 60i (or 50i) I would go with 1/120.
This gives of almost the same motion blur as 1/48 when shooting 24p.

The higher the shutter speed, the less motion blur there will be. If its really fast moving action it wouldnt hurt to shoot at even higher speeds, that way you can take some nice grabs from the footage as well. But then again, some motion blur is nice too....Screw 120hz tv's haha.

When I was rocking my dvx, I was shooting 24pa and 1/48 pretty much all the time.
