Shutter control on AF100

You can choose to have the syncro scan shutter displayed in angles or degrees, so when in 24p, you can set the Syncro Scan to either display 180.0d or 1/48.0. This only applies when you have the camera's shutter speed set to Syncro Scan (which is done by changing the shutter speed past the fastest shutter speed and before it wraps around to the slowest shutter speed, you'll find the Syncro Scan speed inbetween them).

Thanks Barry. The way you choose is by choosing film cam mode(shutter in degrees) or video cam mode(shutter speeds),
right? You can't choose between the two in film cam mode, can you?

You can. I had my cam setup that way. Film mode but shutter speed displayed. Film mode meaning gain was in ISO numbers I believe. I sold the cam so I don't remember it 100% but hit menu and go to the option where you can choose film mode/video mode. You can set ISO/gain in that option. In that set of menus I believe that's where you'll read an option for shutter. What options are listed?

Inside the scene file menu, there is a synchro scan feature. But you can't make a shutter degree/speed
choice. If you're in film mode, it comes up with shutter degrees that you can set. If you're in video mode,
lit comes up with shutter speeds you can set.

Ok now I think I remember what I did. The wheel on the bottom back corner. Push it in and the quick menu options come up. You can select by rotating the wheel syncro speed, VFR, Dial lock and your requested option, Shutter. That should do it for you.

HINT: Press the DIAL SELECT button repeatedly and you can cycle through: DIAL SHUTTER, DIAL SYNCRO SCAN, DIAL FRAME RATE, and DIAL LOCK. The SYNCRO SCAN rate (denoted by shutter angle in film mode) can be adjusted either with the rear wheel, or via menu in the scene file as can the FRAME RATE after you turn VFR MODE to ON). Note that with VFR ON, audio recording is disabled.

The SHUTR/F.RATE can be either pushed in to enable, or disable, certain functions and rotated to adjust rates. It can also be simultaneously pushed in and rotated to speed through some of the settings.

I strongly suggest you save your settings to a CF card and then spend some time learning the settings, abilities, and interaction between the DIAL SELECT button and the SHUTR/F.RATE wheel.

I'd also suggest reading the applicable section of the manual as it's covered there, too.

What I'm trying to determine here, is whether I can set custom(syncro) shutter speeds(not shutter angle-I'm able
to set angle) when the camera is in film mode.

Use the dial as I and John B. just posted about. That should do it. It'll say shutter on the screen when you dial through the shortcut wheel.

You can use the dial select button to select dial shutter and use the wheel to toggle thru preset shutter speeds.
You can also use the dial select button to select dial syncro scan and use the wheel to toggle thru custom shutter
angles. I do not see a function in film mode that allows you to toggle thru & set custom shutter speeds.

Sorry Bruce. I'm not getting what you mean by custom shutter speeds. Sorry I couldn't help any further to resolve your question.

As I said earlier:

"I strongly suggest you save your settings to a CF card and then spend some time learning the settings, abilities, and interaction between the DIAL SELECT button and the SHUTR/F.RATE wheel. I'd also suggest reading the applicable section of the manual as it's covered there, too."

It will be much clearer to you then.

I've read the info on this subject in both the manual & the AF100 book, and I believe David Jimmerson is
right---you can only set syncro shutter speeds when the camera is in video cam mode.

Depending upon mode, the Syncro rates are displayed differently:

FILM CAM: angle display (180.0d etc.)
VIDEO CAM: speed display (1/48.0 etc.)

Again, as in the manual.

And again, I say, you need to spend some worthwhile time getting to know these control settings and their interactions with other settings, or you'll remain confused.

Not confused John, simply following up on the information that BABU put out there--that there is an option in
film mode to choose between setting custom shutter angles and custom shutter speeds. It's not
possible to set custom shutter speeds in film mode, only video mode.

Well, Bruce, if I told you your dog was a parakeet, would you have trouble finding him? <g> Your dog is still the same animal, I've just labeled him differently.

Syncro scan settings are merely labeled differently in the different modes (as listed above). They're still a dog... er, ah... SYNCRO SCAN <g>, the settings just use different terminology in the different modes -- hence the confusion.

Let me jump in here, as I did a year and a half ago (my, how times flies when syncro scanning...).

First, I don't know what a "custom" shutter speed or angle is- you set what you want, does that make it "custom"?

In Film Mode (as you've found, Bruce) Syncro is angle.

In Video Mode, Syncro, while giving you the regular fractional speeds 1/60, etc, also gives you the speeds like 1/60.4 or 1/58.5, which is what you use to keep computer monitors from rolling with a black bar- dial it in til the bar is gone. Back in the days of shoulder cams, syncro scan meant using these rates to shoot monitors cleanly.

Don't know if this helps, but perhaps this is a "custom" answer about "custom" speeds and angles...

You can use the dial select button to select dial shutter and use the wheel to toggle thru preset shutter speeds.

angles. I do not see a function in film mode that allows you to toggle thru & set custom shutter speeds.

you can't have "custom shutter speeds" in film mode I.e. 1/42 or 1/59 of a second. You can have shutter angles, just look up what the desired shutter speed you are looking for is as an angle and set it on the camera. Simple.

i use 172.8 a lot for 24p capture in pal territories.

EDIT: I see this has been said.
