Showing Footage On A Plasma

On a two 4 Gb p2 cam, how do I get my footage out of a FCP sequence to the camera to show about fifteen minutes on a HD plasma?

If your Plasma has a DVI input, you would need to go with a DVI out on your video card (assuming you have a video card that supports DVI out) and that will set up the plasma as a computer monitor, while in FCP go to View/External Video/Digital Cinema Desktop.( There are several choices in Cinema Desktop Preview and I'm not sure of the pro's and con's of them) This is usually the way a two monitor system works, but in your case, the secong monitor will be a Plasma display. There may be other factors such as making sure the timeline is set to "View at Full quality" and weather your plasma support's a "Native" resolution of at least 768 lines. If you have a HDMI input and not DVI then I think you might get a DVI to HDMI adapter(if they make em) or a video card that supports HDMI.

So I can't record back to the HVX200, and play it out the camera to the plasma using component out?

Speaking of this type of connectivaty, What video card should one get to do this.
MOst of my stuff will be sent to a projector for viewing, but will also be sent to a plasma screen at times untill we find a DVD based system.

I am building an edit computer now, and need some ideas on video cards.
My system will be PC based.

If I go canopus, does that have video out for DVI or HDMI?

One other thing, I was reading something about Microsoft blocking 1080p through windows vista while interfaced with certain video cards, and also certain video cards did not support this due to copyright managment through intel.

Can someone speak to that?

You'd have to export an MXF file from Final Cut that you could then drop into the contents folder of a P2 card. Unforunately, Quicktime doesn't have native MXF support yet. Maybe NAB will change that, but don't hold your breath.

I'm in the same boat you are. When I want to show some shots on our HD monitor I have to copy the contents from an archived P2 card back to a card in the camera. Not the slickest method.

Because so many people here are "quality-centric" you will never get a plasma or LCD to resolve to anywhere near 1080 lines (some not even 720). The best option is a CRT or the in-development OLED monitors. Just thought I might throw that out there.

You don't have to do that; you could stream right out of FCP and capture the stream on the camera. Just go into MCR mode and turn the thumbnails off. Make sure the REC FORMAT is set to be compatible with what you're planning on streaming to it (720p/60 or 1080i/60 or whatever) and then tell FCP to print to video, and use the VCR REC buttons on the HVX to record the incoming data stream.

thanks Barry.

And as I understand it, there are component video and audio out of the camera?

Component is an analogue format, so the video may look ok, it isn't digital so the HD will be comprimised, by how much I'm not sure. See that's the problem, the HVX may get the HD into the camera and back, you still need to get HD to the plasma, that's where the "digital cinema desktop" comes into play. I don't know if anyone can develop a Firewire to DVI or HDMI for previewing on HD displays like Plasma's.

There are plenty of LCDs that have full 1080 line (or better) capabilities. In terms of HDTV sets and not computer monitors, there are a few 1080p displays on the market. Mitsubishi, Westinghouse, Sceptre and others offer this. Panasonic, LG, Pioneer and Fujitsu have native 1080p plasma HDTVs that are either shipping now or within the next few months. The Panny 65" native 1080p plasma is awesome. Other options like LCOS and DLP microdisplays are also available with 1080p native resolutions. However, only the displays from Brillian, HP and the JVC Pro line have been confirmed to accept native 1080p input via HDMI @ 60Hz. Some sets like the Samsung and Mitsubishi (at least some of their models) will accept 1080p at lower rates (like 24Hz) or they will accept it over the PC VGA connection and not HDMI.

Here is a good explanation of component vs HDMI or DVI http://www.bluejeanscable.com/articles/dvihdmicomponent.htm
It all depends on the scaling algorithim of your plasma. Technically, component is SD.
Of course if you have your HVX laying around, component-out sounds like the ticket, as you don't have to give up a desktop monitor in a two screen set-up. I have been struggling to find a way to get Hi-def to a plasma, because I won't be the one owning the HVX as the editor.
