Should I sell my HVX for a GH1?

I already own a Canon 7D and the reason I am wondering if I should sell my HVX200a is because I think the GH1 could be a good replacement. The GH1 would be used a a safety shot cam, or B-Camera since there is no recording limit. Also the fact the GH1 lens is interchangeable and portable and better in low light and the price is far lower.

Is there is any reason I should keep the HVX200a?

Because it is a video camera that shoots 100 mbps DVCProHD to start with.

It also shoots intra frame multiple frame rates.

To continue.

But this is your call. It depends so much on what you shoot, not with what.

i convert all footage to proress 422. is that not possible on the GH1?
whats the difference if the hvx shoots at a data rate of 100mbps and the gh1 at a rate of 17mbps, I seen videos from the GH1 on vimeo and cant find a difference. I shoot events.

The detail is somewhat faked, aliasing data, as Barry's posts have shown a lot of recently. This is great most of the time, and personally has never caused me a problem, but the HVX is going to have much higher consistent resolving power, and the image will be reliable, not breaking down so often. The HVX also has proper preamps if you ever want to run audio into it. And it can record SD tape, which comes up sometimes in professional environments. And the file format is easier to work with. And it has better frame rates. The codec is the main point in my mind. Also, the P2 standard is extremely reliable compared to the consumer SD type. Ergonomically, it has a lot of benefits for video work. It's built just for video. Exposure is much easier to work with, thanks to built in ND filters and on screen adjustments. I find the GH1 has an annoying habit of changing frame rates since the dial is so close to your hand. The HVX also looks more professional.

But maybe none of that affects you. It really depends on your needs. Maybe you need the $1,000 difference more than you need an HVX camera. Maybe the list of benefits you didn't ask for that the GH1 carries is worth the trade. None of us can answer that.

To be clear on my position, I sold my HVX for a GH1 largely because I needed that $1,000 difference.

I have an HPX170 and I have been spending the last few weeks with the GH1 and I am not that impressed with the GH1. I am glad I did not purchase it.

As compared with my HPX 170 I really like the HPX more.

A significant difference when you factor in color space, and intraframe, et al.

Viewing heavily compressed Vimeo, ER, or youtube footage as a point of comparison isn't an approach I would take.

But you seem to have decided already.

good luck

So true. After picking up a 7D and seeing raw footage off the camera it is evident to me that these things are nice toys but not ready to run with the big guns. If you already have a 7D I cannot think of a really good reason to ditch the HVX200.

But like was said, it's all up to you and what you think will serve you best.
