Should I get the XL2 or a DVX100?

I am planning to buy a camera which i will use mainly for filming music video's and short films.

what are peoples opinions on what i should get?

at the moment i'm leaning towards the XL2, and the price difference isn't an issue to me.

thanks in advance for any help.

Well, why are you considering these older cameras? If price isn't too much of a concern, then why not consider the Canon XH-A1? Shoots native 16:9 SD, like the XL2 but can be matched pretty close with a DVX. Also has 20x zoom and shoots HD. Maybe you don't need HD, but its just a little more expensive than the one's you've mentioned.

I find your question strange - there's hundreds of posts on this forum asking that. They give you the pros and cons of each camera. Check them out, but they're older posts - DVX is a great camera but its starting to age a bit.

Thanks for the response.

Well my college have a load of sony-pd170's, and a few JVC GY-HD110E's, and so i've used both. while the JVC GY-HD110 seemed a little out of my price range, the sony pd-170 was a bit down market in my opinion. Thus I wanted somthing which produced good filmlike images but wasn't quite as much as the JVC GY-HD110. I saw the XL2 which looked good, and in researching further I found that many people said the DVX100 was better. This left me in confusion as to what to get, and I saw alot of people discussing it on here, but they were all quite old posts, so I joined and put this post up inorder to get an idea as to what the current thoughts were.

I wasn't sure on HD camera's because I read that for the price they weren't producing brilliant results. Plus there is more memory need to proccess uncompressed HD, which my computer currently doesn't have, and if you compress it I've heard that there isn't much difference between SD and HD. plus most TV's i know aren't HD atm, so it would produce that different results.

So in your opinion, will the Canon XH A1 provide an image the same (or better than) that of the XL2 or DVX100?

thanks again.

I bought an XL2 about a year ago now. Today I would buy an XH A1. It's an HD market and even if you don't want HD now, you can shoot SD and then just flip a switch when you're ready. Also, the resale values for SD cameras are quickly falling. So if you plan to eventually sell the camera and upgrade in a few years, an HD camera will be worth a lot more.

Of course, thats if they don't come out with 20 more HD formats that end up obsoleting the camera you now have. I have an XL2 and love it. It takes really sharp images and since very few people have HD TV's and even fewer have HD systems such as BlueRay, shooting HD to me is a waste of time and disk space. Which is another big thing to think about. If you shoot HD you're going to have to have quite a system to deal with it.

But I agree, the future is definitely HD.

i am in a very similar situation, however cost is very much an issue. I have been considering the DVX100B and the XL2 but am looking for some major differences. For some odd reason the search function is not working (at least for me right now). Matt, do you have a link to some of those other threads?
i also agree that a more recent opinion might be a good one. thanks guys

I have an XL2 and initially wanted to buy a DVX100. The reason I went with the XL2 is because it has a native 16x9 CCD and that is very important for Filmmakers and Widescreen TV productions.

I would love to have an XL-H1 (maybe even an XH A1), but the budget keeps me on the XL2. I have to admit that the image quality is really amazing (if you set it up correctly). You can really go very far with this camera. I have a PAL version.

For the 16x9 reason I would go with the XL2.
