Should I buy a 60D and sell my T2i?

T2i was my first camera, I got it last year and have been using it with the kit lens but I think I'm ready to buy one of the "good" lenses for it, I haven't been in the loupe with what's been released by canon and just looked up and found the next generations of my camera have a swivel screen.

Now, I've always, always hated the locked screen on the T2i, I've even though of selling it once and getting a camcorder or something so I could have a viewfinder pointed up or the swivel screen atleast. having to bend down tilt your neck and try to look into the screen (or in my case a loupe) is hell. I literally hit my head once trying to get a table shot lol

I had bought a 130$ viewfinder loupe (LCDViewfinder or something) for it and have been using that cause of the gosh darn glossy screen, so I have had to keep leveled with the thing wherever I want the camera to go.

I hear that the 60D has a "non reflective" screen, is that actually usable in the sun without a viewfinder loupe? I think "the less acessorys, the better" Which is probably completely opposite for dslrs.

If not, I could always loupe my loupe on the 60D as I think it has the same 3" screen size as the t2i, it wouldn't break the screen or anything applying pressure when the lcd screen is swiveled out would it?

so the 60D is 899$ (for body) untill Sep 3rd, if they come back instock. I could sell my T2i and kit lens and hopefully only shell out 150$ of my own for the 60D.

I have 650$ to spend right now I was planning on spending on a few things, either a better lens, or maybe some beginning audio equipment, or try and set up my own green screen.

Oh and I've been using Magic Lantern so I have all the other important features that the 60D has (white balance, audio gain thingy)

What do you guys think?

the articulating screen, seperate shutter and aperture controls and kelvin temp white balance option make the 60d a GREAT upgrade.

the 60d screen may be "non-reflective" but its still reasonably glossy.

Coming from the GH1 to t2i was a downgrade for me, especially since I never used it on rigs or anything. If my t2i was rigged it wouldn't be so much of a problem. But the ergonomics of the t2i was a nightmare to me and if I was switching from one format to another I might as well go to its equivalent or better. Anyway, the 60D build quality seems SO much better than the t2i. I don't know how you'd feel about shelling out a few hundred more for the 60d to get essentially the same camera, just in a better body. I returned my t2i to B&H after two days and got the 60D and have been extremely happy.

Thanks for the input guys!

How does it have separate shutter and fstop controls? I was looking around the camera on BHPhoto and couldn't find anything like that on it, if it does then that's even a better deal.

Yeah the build quality I heard was alot better also, that's one of the reasons I was thinking of upgrading. I think I may do it. I also just found out about that "Canon loyalty program" deal, but that's for a refurbished camera [risky], I would actually be making money if I do that though.

Impossible to see much more than general framing in direct sunlight. I have a loupe that hangs out on the screen which works well but you may need some additional support for the screen to keep it from flopping down at some angles.

I had considered getting a T2i a while back but some hands on experience convinced me that the Canon DSLRs just weren't "there yet" as far as I was concerned. The 60D got me to change my mind (most of all because of the swivel screening and audio gain control). There are a number of things that make it a great choice:

-Swivel LCD is a neccesity as far as I'm concerned. It's not just great for video but has also come in handy a lot for stills. Sometimes I want a low angle show without having to crawl on my belly and sometimes I want to raise my hands up and get a higher shot without needing a ladder. I've found it workable in direct sunlight.

-Color Temp input is great. I got used to just being able to dial in my color temperature with the EX1 and this feature is really important to me. I don't want to use presets and I don't want to use strait white balance. I want to be able to make the image warmer or cooler as I see fit and I love that control.

-60D has a lot of the intermediate ISOs which not only give you more control but tend to have less noise. This is great for low light situations.

-Audio Gain Control is essesntial if you want audio to go in the camera (not as important if you have an external device).

-Extra wheel on the body makes handling exposure much easier. You have one wheel for your shutter speed and anther for your aperture. Couldn't do without it.

-Finally, the 60D feels WAY more sturdy than the T2i or T3i. It just feels like a stronger/more professional piece of equipment.

60D also has one user setting button which is very handy. You just choose the settings on the camera you usually start your shooting with, for example Cinestyle from picture style menu, 24p, 1/50 shutter speed, ISO 160, f2.8 and outdoor WB. Then you click save user settings from camera menu and next time you dial the user setting option from the "shooting mode dial" (don't know what it's in english, but the main dial on the top left side of the camera where you can choose auto, manual etc modes) you get those settings instantly and you can start shooting instantly.

if the main reason for switching is the swivel screen, have you considered getting a gh1 for $399?

ugafan,

I've always been curious about the GH1, seeing how popular it's forum has been since the hack was released. I'll definitely look up some information on that ( I didn't know it had a swivel screen too) Right now I'm pretty set on buying a 60D though, but the savings could really help me out.

I have one last question. I just read a review on the 60D and found out it has "Weather Proofing" does that mean I could take it out in 90% humidity, or in light rain / dusty places (deserts, mars, landfills) providing I had a weather proofed lens (of course) and not have the camera get damaged?

I know you are using primarily for video, but if you get the GH1 you can absolutely forget about having a reliable photography camera with any lens other than the pancake lens. The 14-140 lens is ONLY good in sunlight. Anything else you will have nightmares.
