Cam settings were pretty much standard F6 although I took the Master ped down to -7.
I did my own color balance because I used 2 craftsmen worklights on tripods. Not ideal. But cheap.
No idea of the color temp but I had about 2000watts.
I liked it. I get my own AG-DVX100A next week and want to mostly mess around before doing anything official and nice. Horror is always my genre of choice too as I love and collect DVD horror films and they can be relatively inexpensive to make. Might do documentary style flicks as well.
Anyway, I didn't watch the clip with the sound on but visually I liked the scene. I think you can see that your mind works good for final product with a single camera being used as when the girl comes around the bottom of the steps and you cut to the shot from up the stairs she is still moving a bit. A lot of people using one camera might have started the next shot forgeting she had been moving ever so slightly at the end of the last shot. Good work...especially being your first with that camera.
You hit the nail on the head. I am just trying out the camera and having some fun. I know this short isnt going to win any awards, but it is an excercise in learning what i can and cant do with the camera and lighting.
I nearly have it fully edited. I will post it sometime soon.
Good luck with your camera. I am sure you will love it. Get something posted up here soon.
other than the awkward cuts which im sure you will fix and refine, I love the shot you hold as she climbs the stairs. it's tense. that's filmmaking. so all you really need is 3 cuts. she comes around the stairs. which i love for its steady cam - it adds to the drama. then the shot from upstairs....
I don't want to tell you how to make your movie but replace the cut from her back to just from her side looking up... climbing and side pan like you did then to the long stair climb that i mentioned. in other words, don't giveaway the "upstairs" just yet. hold it off. works yea? that was my ***hole opinion.
anyway, whether you would have mentioned it or not, it did give me the jamie lee curtis feel right when I saw it. I love Halloween.... good luck with achieving that.
The editing continues. I have a couple of awkward cuts that I am struggling with. I should have shot more coverage, but this was all shot in about 2 hours. No big deal. I'll know for next time.
Also next time I will actually try and recreate the 70's with some costumes and set decorations. I too love Halloween. The great "golden age" of John Carpenter. hehe.
Hopefully will finish up this weekend. I will post it soon. Wait till you see what is up those stairs!

Hopefully he'll have another "golden age" soon....hopefully soon...
I'm with you Tyler. I grew up on Carpenter. Halloween, Assault on Precinct 13, Escape from New York, The Thing. So awesome. Plus he was a multi-tasker. Directing, writing, editing, music.
I hate to dis on him now. There were elements of Vampires that I liked. Ghosts of Mars would have been 1000 times better if he had been allowed to have Jason Statham as the lead instead of Ice Cube.
I think he has at least one more GREAT film in him. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. ;D
Would you rather have a director that develops him/herself or have a director that constantly makes crap and never be able to live up to what fans loved him/her for or if they ever did in the first place?
what i'm thinking is kinda like directors that disappear for a bit and come back with something unusual... like Tarantino did. Like Lucas did... yeah, unusual.... like Coppola, he's doing something now. "Megalopolis" I believe. he's been out of the picture for a bit hasn't he?
ok now im wondering if that's even a legitimate question... I dunno.
I agree with the previous ideas on the editing of the clip you posted. I definitely feel that if you have the camera up the stairs it kind of makes it a known instead of an unknown....do you know what I mean...where she's going needs to be a mystery so you don't want the audience's point of view to be already there....
Again, I'm not trying to tell you how to edit your movie, it's all subjective but just something to think about if you are at the very early stages.
I'd be more interested in seeing the full clip where the actress is on the couch, the lighting is much better there...but keep up the work, it's looking really good.
don't have to show off in front of us. do what you gotta do.
hey disjecta, do you have any sample footage of heavy rain fall on your dvx? just curious.
