Shotgun Mics for DVX100b

Do you guys buy XLR input mics and how long are the leads that you guys use? My one hangs down all over the place and I have to tuck it into my trousers and wrap it over my neck as well lol. I.e are the XLR inputs your only choice for a shotgun mic, there are no jack inputs anywhere on the camera? (Cant see any.)

CAn I get a much shorter XLR lead? I have a Lane shotgun mic that came with the camera when I bought it and its horrible, I can constantly hear a waterfall type noise in the background and crackling. I've changed the switch on the mic but it doesnt get rid of that noise, I think it may be just a crap mic all together.

Also, do you guys prefer using shotgun mics or boom mics?

get a rode ntg2 along with what those guys said. http://www.dvcreators.net/rode-ntg-2/

good mic...decent price.

A boom mic is a shotgun (or other type for mic example hypercardiod on a boom pole). So if ur asking if we prefer having the shotgun on camera or on the boom pole then boom pole is better because u can get the mic in very close for the best audio. however that is not always possible.

How do you know it's the mic that's horrible, and not the cable or the DVX preamps?

If you're looking to buy a new mic, check out the audio forum. There are audio samples you can listen to.

Hello Iain. True that, I dont know that its not the cable, it could well be. I will buy a new, shorter XLR cable and see what happens.

Hey Jambredz. Yes thats what I meant, whether you prefered having the mic on the camera or on a boom pole. I guess using a boom pole wouldnt be great for a running chase scene for example.

Do you have a rode NTG2? Does it plug in with a XLR cable?

Hi Londude,

After some research on the internet an specificly on the audio section of DVXuser I learned that entry level mics are something like $250. In Europe they are sold from 190 euro's and more (that would be 280 australian dollars/354 New Zealand Dollars). The brands/types I currently have on my wishlist (based on that novice research) are:
Rode NTG2 (but NTG1 is cheaper, and since I'm just starting... could be an option)
Azden SGMX2 (but SGMX1 is cheaper, etc.)

It's more something I have in the back of my mind though. I use it as a guideline when browsing online stores.

And yesterday, out of the blue I stumbled upon a secondhand Azden smx10 with xlr connector (and a nice short cable by the way), which just happened to be for sale in my own neighbourhood. And since I currently only have the DVX built-in mic and since the smx10 is better thant that, I bought it for 50 euro (72 dollar). Just untill I buy one of the more professional ones. And by that time I think my list will be different.

I can put that small thing on a pole too of course.

Hey dude, thanks for the info.

Yeh the Rode NTG2 sounds like a plan, I think I will get one. I usually use the internal DVX mic and its great really, only problem is it records the zoom noise which is a pain.

I'm actually from England i just live here on a visa. Any Dutch films you can recommend? I'm really into international cinema.

Some Dutch filmmakers I am proud of:
Alex van Warmendam (writer/director/producer/actor/playwright/composer/etc. very much his own style/tone and with great respect to the audience's intelligence)

Theo van Gogh (enfant terrible/writer/director/hated_and_loved_person/murdered for his opinion and art)

Tim Oliehoek (currently makes more hollywoodlike fun/nonsense movies, wich is nice since the Dutch don't succeed in 'that look' that often - storywise doesn't go for the audience's intelligence that much)

Glad you asked. :Drogar-Happy(DBG):

yes
...and if u think the internal mic is great then u'll think the rtg2 is awesome. (the internal mic is crap in reality). And yes you would use a boom mic in running scene if you have a sound person. if u are shooting alone or dont have a sound person then no you wont.

I suggest you get the sound dvd thats sold on this site. really good dvd for the basics and will help u get good sound.

The point is to get the microphone as close as possible to whatever it is you're recording; that is your very first priority when recording sound. If you have dialogue during this running chase scene, yes, you should try to boom it. (If there isn't dialogue, the sound can be added in post.)

You can hear the difference for yourself even using the DVX internal mic -- record yourself speaking right up next to the mic (but don't get so close that it distorts), and then 10-12 feet away, and decide which one sounds better. Then, keep in mind that if you're mounting your mic on your camera, all of your dialogue is going to sound like it does when you stand that 10-12 feet away.

Oh ok. I'll try using a boom pole and having the mic attached to the camera
