Shorted 1394 = $820 repair?!?!

My friend bought the XH A1 about 40 days ago. It worked fine for capture several times. Then one time it refused to work. I tested everything for him and found the firewire port to be the culprit. He sent it to Canon under warranty and they claim that a circuit board fried as well and that it will cost him $820 to repair it. Does that price sound right?

The camera is fully functional other than that port. For that price I told him to get an HV20 and capture with that, since that's what he was planning on getting later to use as a deck and 2nd camera.

Has anyone had any experience with Canon and getting a fried firewire port fixed? $820 sounds a bit rediculous to me.

I fried one of our HVXs port along with my MBPs FW ports and although I didn´t get a quote from Pana, I got one from Apple: 1260 Euros to fix, now convert this to dollars...
Automation and higher volume poduction make the more or less acceptable prices for the new stuff, but when it comes to repair with manual labor and fancy spare parts, you´ll be asked a premium...

$820 is just ridiculous. I had my firewire port replaced on the A1 about six months ago out of warranty and it was about $260 total. It's basically a $20 part and they charged $240 for labor. No way should it be $820.

Also, a fried port when the camera is essentially brand new should be covered under warranty. They'll try to claim that it's an accident, but don't admit fault. Demand to speak to their supervisor and get it straighten out. Something smells fishy.

Hello Butler360,
I agree with Huy Vu. I havn't had this problem but if your camera is still under warranty a fried port is certainly an arguable point.

yes, I do think this is a problem with the a1s as Mine went out on my a1 2 months before warranty was up but i needed my cam to do paying work and couldn't afford to send it in and wait for two months for them to get it back to me, so I purchased an hv20 and have not had any issues.

Ridiculous quote. I had the same experience, and it was fixed free (took weeks, but that's a different story)

psh for that price just buy an HV30 and use it as a deck to upload, AND you'll have a B roll camera, all for a hundred dollars less!
I burnt my firewire port out on both my HV30 and my A1, yeah i know, i fail. But i sent them both in under warranty and they were repaired for free. The HV30 was even replaced completely.

Thanks for all the input. We're going to try to get Canon to repair it for free and then put that $820 towards an HV30.

I knew their price sounded strange!

I fried the firewire port on my A1 about 2 months after I got it and Canon replaced the board for free under warranty.
