short shot on DVX -- Come Quickly

Re: short shot on DVX -- Come Quickly

Hey Taylor,

I enjoyed your short. I liked the simple title/credit sequences.

My one suggestion is this: The narration includes a lot of science and I think you could visually illustrate some of the things the narrator is saying (eg, electrons firing could be as simple as bursts of light) I don't mean literally -- you did an excellent job of "showing the science" when you explained the white light/tunnel people describe with near death experiences.

Re: short shot on DVX -- Come Quickly

Taylor, I think this is an excellent short. I actually subscribe to a lot of the theories in the film. The visuals were good and the editing was very smooth.

It's deceptively simple to protray the very complex emotions and physical states you talk about from an acting standpoint and I thought you pulled this off very well.

Generally speaking, I'm not a big fan of video effects but in this context it was not distracting but appropriate.

My one piece of advice would be to try to create a better quality quicktime file. You may be limited in bandwidth but, because there are so many fast-moving images, it tends to break up a lot.

Thanks for sharing,

Steven

Taylor -- wow! I'm not yet skilled enough to comment on the techie stuff, but your creativity is inspiring. I love it when a piece is able to communicate something, connect. Like Disjecta, it speaks to my own values. Very moving. I'm glad you finally got around to posting it.

Re: short shot on DVX -- Come Quickly

that was great! I really enjoyed it and it looked really proffesional, all the effects were really well done. Good work

Re: short shot on DVX -- Come Quickly

I loved it. Was it all done in camera with settings, or was it done post-production?

By the way, I liked the theme and generally agree. Although, it's called a category error when mixing spiritual stuff with material issues. (Einstein reference.) I guy (philosopher) named Emanual Kant helped put that issues to rest. However, a living philosopher, Ken Wilber, has revived the issue in a modern context, and appears to be succeeding in putting science and spirituality back together without violating Kant's proofs.

(Sorry, couldn't help but say something on one of the few topics I keep up on! :)) You might like Ken Wilber. Simple Google search will have plenty of links.

I thought the "effects" really went along with the narration. It was one of the best things I've seen here.

Re: short shot on DVX -- Come Quickly

A very good looking film on an interesting topic-well done. I agree with Gabe, the animations were the coolest. More would be better.

Re: short shot on DVX -- Come Quickly

I thought the V.O. was superb. His dialect, southern, was fantastic and his expression through voice control was great.

The over exposed look of the short gave an amazing film-like presence. The paused shots and the whistling was great too.

Good Job Taylor.

Did you enter it into any film contests? or festivals?
How long from start to finish, did it take you to complete?

Re: short shot on DVX -- Come Quickly

wow, thanks :D

i don't have time to respond to everyone individually right now, but i'm glad you guys generally liked it!

start to finish (you're going to think i'm lying) was 15 days, from concept to completion--we got lucky with some great locations, all for free (except the merri-go-round)

i've not entered it in any festivals, due to a hard disk crash which destroyed my master--i'm working on recovering it this weekend. sob!

interesting side note: can anyone identify what was used for the tunnel shot? ::)

Re: short shot on DVX -- Come Quickly

ps: all of the shutter speed, blow-outs, and black-crunches were done in-camera; the saturation, color-correction, and (very simple) compositing were done in FCP4

Re: short shot on DVX -- Come Quickly

You had to pay for a merrygoround?? damn nazi's...

I'm guessing you used a sock, sleeve, or pant leg? heh...of course with a crossdisolve on top of something else, like a fence or a house design?

Re: short shot on DVX -- Come Quickly

nazis indeed ;) though it was more of a bribe to the disinterested highschool kid running it, rather than a payout to the owners

pant leg? nice....but wrong.

I was initially going to do it 3d in after effects, but was running out of time. i looked around the house, and found a roll of toilet paper :o

it worked great--shoot the overcast sky while squeezing the tube...but it will be horribly obvious now that you know ;)

haha! ;D

Re: short shot on DVX -- Come Quickly

Taylor,
Nice job. I, for one liked the science meets God arguement. It kinda had a "Fight Club" feel(with the scientific narrartion) which I like,(also strengthened by the physical simularities between your actor and Edward Norton) :D Keep it up!

Re: short shot on DVX -- Come Quickly

Raptor beat me to the punch, but I too thought it had that Ed Norton (25th Hour) feel to it. Even the actor resembled Norton.

Excellent piece of work!

Re: short shot on DVX -- Come Quickly

Hey I really liked the short. I feel the same way about science and God.
It kind of reminds me of a scene of a past movie you might have seen.
(The Movie Contact) With Matthew McCONAUGHEY and Jodie Foster.
In one scene Jodie said to Matthew "What would you do if science one day proved God did not exist?".... I wanted so bad for him to come back and say to her "What would you do if Science someday proved that God Exist. or something to that affect."
I thought it was great!

Re: short shot on DVX -- Come Quickly

Very nice work. Held my attention throughout and it spoke volumes. I look forward to more work from this artist.

Re: short shot on DVX -- Come Quickly

Hey, Thats awsome, I love the way you did this, it has kinda a spike lee style to it.

The only thing I didnt really like was at some points in the naration it sounded like the guy was just reading from a script and not actualy putting feeling into the words....

Now I think the visual end of it and the script is awsome but I think there needs more emotion in the words to make it more dramatic.

Just my opinion.,.. Otherwise I LOVE the way you filmed this... Its exactly what I was wondering if the dvx could do something of this nature.. no one had really done anything with this kind of style to it.
