Short: "I Don't Understand You" - First try at Kinetic Typography

So in an effort to start learning After Effects, I gave myself a weekend project: create a kinetic typography video. This is my first attempt at one:

Created in AE CS4 over the course of 2 days (Yesterday and Today). I really don't know much in After Effects yet, but I feel that this little project helped to give me a handle on how the program works. I feel confident enough now to use it for very basic titling and such. I'll slowly get a bit more experience in it for sure.

Opinions? Comments? Suggestions?

This looks very beginner after effects. Your use of font and color is the main giveaway--ugly dropshadows, flat colors that don't go with eachother, and other stuff like that.

Keep trying. The best way to do this sort of thing is to look at other strong examples and go from there.

Well, it is very beginner after effects. I was more concerned with seeing if I could figure out how to make elements work together. Once I know how to get that, then I can focus on better looking effects.

I think one of the things that really looks great in the good examples of kinetic typography, is excellent use of non text graphics, and playing well with 3d space. neither of which I did here.

Looks better than my first try!

I've worked at it for 4-5 months now, and I feel like I'm doing some pretty decent kinetic typography now. As long as you recognize you have plenty of room to improve (not an insult, we all do!), and are willing to put in the time, you'll get there eventually.

check out video copilot.net

to give you a tip that took me a while to figure out, instead of just watching the episode and hitting pause every two seconds and following what he does, watch the tutorial first all the way through without touching after effects, than think of some other way you could use what he teaches in that tutorial, any other way you could use whatever tricks A.K. explains, and than make your own thing. You'll learn more that way than just copying his tutorial step by step

I do watch video copilot. I only started messing with this stuff, perhaps 3 weeks ago, and then, usually only have the time on weekends. His site is a fantastic resource.

I learned of videocopilot like a year ago but in that year I didn't use it much so iim still an amateur at it. Now that I have my camera I should get more practice with it though

Going to try a dbz kamameha tutorial on YouTube today lol
