Short HVX Reel

yea I liked it too - but I just feel that it needs better editing and a less recognizable song playing.

Yeah I love the Seeker but it makes me think of American Beauty and The Limey.

Great images, the period stuff looks great.

Incredible. What kind of projects are these shots from? Were you using an adapter at all?

Really nice reel did you use the mini 35 and also what kind of lighting where you using in some of those shots HMIs? for the hospital some kinos?

FINALLY, somebody who posts stuff with TACK SHARP focus. I would say 90% of the stuff shot on HD posted in this forum lacks that. It is rare to see HD stuff in focus....sadly.

ash =o)

Thanks for the props! I'm a stickler for Sharp focus.

I used an M2 for a couple of the period shots. They are from a short I DP'd a couple weeks ago and my first time with the M2. Stuff looks good - but it definitely takes a bit to get oriented with the upside down image!

The shots are mainly from a variety fo short films I've DP'd this winter/spring, a couple commercials in there, a pilot for ESPN and a promo for a helicopter company.

Tatsuo - right on the nail. Lots of HMIs, kinos in the hospital with some 1k and smaller tungsten units corrected and spattered around for rims. On some of the adapter shots we had issues when shooting slomo with the HMIs even though they were on their "flicker free" setting. These occurred from the combination of the camera shutter, shooting in increased frame rates and the ground glass spinning in the M2. Too many things to be "flicker free" with! It was minimalized by disabling the camera shutter and never occured unless a shot was overcranked. Id did some quick troubleshooting in the field and disolved the problem.

Nathan,

These were great shots and definitely make me wish I could get my reel to look as professional as yours.

You have an uncanny ability to capture great shot straight of the bat with the hvx. I mean, none of those were color corrected? wow. what are you using on the filed to verify image (just the hvx lcd?)

What settings are you using for things like capturing the helicopter blades without much motion blur? Or how about that blue car as its sliding over the mud?

How about the woman's silhouette when standing on top of the hill and the wind is blowing?

Did you mess with the camera settings on those green shots of the man (in a Laundromat I believe?) ?

How are you keeping things in focus so well with the M2 (did you get a Follow Focus)?

Are you using a dolly on most shots. seems like just a tripod pan wasn't enough to get the fluidity of the shots you have. and If that was Shoulder mounted then wow because it was super smooth.

TIA

Really wonderful stuff!!!! Congratulations.

Hey Nathan
What lenses were you using on the M2 cinema? Also any suggested settings for an outdoor shoot i have coming up they want vibrant colours blue skies green plants swimming pools etc, whilst at the same time retaining naturalism. I will be strapping on the pola., maybe some grads but i am used to the settings on the dvx not the hvx.
Thanks
And once again awesome work

corection - the first sshot of the car was color corrected - i pulled it form an old time line and forgot to pull the filter of. Otherwise there is no color correction in that clip.
I use the viewfinder for focus and framing, lcd for a little monitoring. I also have a 9" Sony field monitor that I use to check the colors in SD. I dont often use an HD monitor in the fields - mostly because I cant afford it!

The helicopter blades were just default camera settings. In fact most of the helicopter stuff was the first time I used the HVX. I bought it for that job and it didnt arrive to the morning of shooting, so I had to run with it right out of the box.

There's not much of it going on in the shots on this reel - but I like to crank the camera to 60fps and then get the camera shutter up really high - around 1/500 and go handheld. It gives things a surreall effect - Everything is super crisp like in high speed sports photography, the camera moves smoothly but in an erratic way while seeming in real time - as all the action and actors occurs in slomo.

How about the woman's silhouette when standing on top of the hill and the wind is blowing?
Just dropped the blacks. Contrary to what i see on here alot, I prefer to use Cine V because it generally seems to deliver silkier noiseless blacks in my experience. Many people like Cine D or go with B Press, but in my testing Cine V always seems to result in a better raw image. Wether or not that works as well with an image you intend on manipulating a ton could be different.
I read alot of post complaining about the HVX in low light - I've done a ton of night shooting and low light stuff, but I've never had an issue with noise or blacks.

Did you mess with the camera settings on those green shots of the man (in a Laundromat I believe?) ?
It was for a rush job with a quick turn around, so rather than let them do that in post, we just white balance a red shirt that was a prop. It was enough to ofset the color a ton and give us a nice green.

How are you keeping things in focus so well with the M2 (did you get a Follow Focus)?
I have a follow focus, but only recently aquired the M2 so I didn't have the right gear to use it. For the couple of M2 shots in there - I either had an AC pulling focus or I did it myself while watching the monitor.

Are you using a dolly on most shots. seems like just a tripod pan wasn't enough to get the fluidity of the shots you have. and If that was Shoulder mounted then wow because it was super smooth.
A couple are just pans and tilts. Dolly for a few others. The old man in the hospital is a jib mounted on a dolly. All the helicopter stuff was handheld from the heli.

Can you post more of that rally footage?

Sure - I've got a ton of it. We shot a Rally event in colorado with 5 HVXs, a small sony HDV cam for in camera stuff and a Sony ENG style camera (the model slips my mind at the moment). We had a helicpoter for 2 days and also had several lipstick cameras in key cars. We did alot with Travis Pastrana and Ken Block - we even got invited to a BBQ at Ken Blocks house in Park City! It was amazing!

I'll dig through some this weekend when I get back to my office and post some here.

Thank you so much Nathan for taking the time to answer my questions. :)

When you say that with the M2, your AC was pulling focus, you mean that you had the M2 and had your FF attached, or do you mean he was pulling focus by moving the lense? and was he using the LCD on the camera as well. I'm thinking about a marshall, and or Ikean for this kind of work with my M2.

That footage is really nice.

I also saw that link to the rally video on your web site. That clip where the car flips a bunch of times, almost hits a photographer is amazing.

I used Nikon primes. I went with them because they came up over and over again in my research and ultimately went with them because I saw some great clips with them. Though I'd have to say overall I wish I could afford to go with some nice PL mount film lenses. The Nikons have odd weak color spots and halation in sharpness from the glass. They werent designed to be used for motion imaging and it shows. It does give a nice depth effect though. Also slr lenses have a wide range of breathing in the focus ring where as motion picture lenses do not. Still lenses are intended to be used for photos where focus changes mid shot so they didnt have to concern themselves with the huge changes in focal distance during a focus pull.

As far as your colors go - dont crank the chroma in the camera too much - maybe a plus 2 max, use the Cine V preset and hope for a perfect day. Panasonic has a reputation for producing vivid surreal colors and the HVX does it well!

in that instance the AC was moving the lens - but now I have the gear so i'll just use my follow focus. Been looking athe Marshalk myself!

That crash is insane. I didnt shoot that particular crash, I just did the edit and encoding for their website. I've done alot of Rally shooting though, just happened to not be there for that crash!
