Short film with DOF adaptor and HMC151

At last! Just updated from our DVX100 cameras to HVC151 ones (European version of HMC150.
Also we are just learning all the ins and outs of HD, so far so good. The 151 is a fantastic easy replacement for us as it's so similar to the 100, it was also priced well.
So now fully HD, and have sold the SD cameras, so to get us into a work flow that is comfortable before making mistakes with clients we have decided to shoot a ten minute short.
We've done this many times in the passed so already have a vast amount of equipment in hand and a loyal handful of helpers so budgeted $200, literally for feeding everyone.
We also intend to use a crew of three where we can get away with it. We are using an SGPro to allow us to use prime lenses (50mm most of the time) and will shot 25p.

Sorry, I missed of part of the post, The footage in the vimeo clip (link below) was the last thing I shot on the DVX100 before upgrading, purely as a test for the feel of the short, I will post HD footage once I have something worth posting.

uh, why not just post a link directly to this 'film' that you want us to see??
where's the beef?! =)

I'm guessing it's "Ultra low budget short - experimental test reel - standard definition."?

Nice - great audio. As a VFX guy the one thing that leaped way out at me was the fact that your muzzle flares have darker edges than the background, which never actually happens in nature. Light is additive, no known substance can suck light away. So with your bright desert backdrop, your muzzle flares should only be adding light, not having a dark border.

If you did it in After Effects or Motion, just change the blending modes of those layers to either "Add" or "Screen".

Pretty good :). Just curious, why is it not in HD? The HMC150 doesn't even have the option for SD.

tigerFX - Thanks, I have edited it the links so it's clearer why the clip is SD, I agree completely with your points regarding the muzzle flashes, I know nothing about motion graphics and effects so I didn't do them, I farmed them out to a mate and he did them for free and at speed because I wasn't paying him, as stated it's just a test. Also the lad is not firing at a realistic rate, this is lack of direction on my part!

Averan - I have no Idea 'where's the beef' means. I had no idea that I was to supply a meat product/snack when posting a topic. I'm also suspicious I have my 'be polite' setting turned up too high....

^^

"Where's the Beef" is an old American joke based on a resturaunt chain called Wendy's TV advertisements and hamburger (meat product) patties being too small in their competitors sandwiches.

Translated it means, where is the item you wish us to see? We don't see it...

Ah, I see, thanks Hal2.

Well I have made the 'beef' more accessible by adding another link, I just assumed people would be interested in the production stills. Perhaps not.

I'm also aware that the footage isn't actually shot with a HMC151, however as it's relevant to the on going thread I thought I'd put it here. I hope this doesn't displease anyone.

On a lighter note, I am amazed that the HMC151 (150) has seemingly passed unnoticed by the broadcast/Pro video world, I'm seeing lots of Sony's comparatively priced kit but not the Panasonic 150. Which is odd when you consider the stress free work flow it offers compared to tape and bolt on (expensive) drives .

Any way, I will post some footage shortly.

Thanks for looking Hal2, very much appreciated. Now the feet sticking out of the wall are that of one of the crew when we went filming in some of the lost underground tunnels the nice Nazis left behind bless them. I have the video somewhere, I'll see if I can dig it out. It's amazing what they did here in such a short time really. Miles of tunnels, crazy.

Also here is a link to some of the HD footage shot with the HMC151, still getting use to Vimeo but I think I've done it right. I have graded the footage a little, but will do it all properly when I've finished principal.

Maybe it's just me but it seems like your aspect ratio is off a little bit? Noticed that in the other clip as well...

What is you workflow?

BTW gave you a like :)

Hi Hal2, my work flow may well be wrong, this is it so far - I use FCP, I log and transfer off the SD card in to Apple pro res in to a new project, I'm unsure of the sequence settings, in fact I'm not that sure of the project settings as Panasonic don't give many clues! BTW I have added a 2:35:1 wide screen matte, as this is the look I want to finish with, like a cinemascope look. What is the optimum work flow? I would love to no for sure I'm doing the right thing from the start! Cheers.

I don't use FCP so can't really comment on the procedure...

I can tell you though that the footage from an HMC150 is 1920x1080 or 1280x720. Someone else will have to tell you if you have to set any special settings for it (I do in Sony Vegas)

What resoulution are you outputing at? That would be the big question as well.

Hum, good question, do you mean how many lines am I exporting to? Or what I'm capturing at.

I'm capturing at 1920x1080 25p. and exporting to 1080i HD 16:9, if that makes sense...

By the way, if I wanted to insert slow motion in to a 1080i 25p sequence would I shot 720 50p or 1080 50i ? I've a lot to learn about HD !

If your shooting in progressive, you really shoulnd't render it out as Interlaced for web... You'd probably be better off leaving it as 1:1 instead of 16:9 again for web and might explain why it looked a tad off too me.

Your better off shooting in 720/50P and dropping it on a 25p timeline for slowmotion.
