1DC: Short film "the other" - sci fi/thriller shot in one day on canon 1dc

Hi all,

I recently wrote and directed this short film. Film has been my passion for a very long time but only now do I have a bit more time to work at it. So this my first try. I have learnt so much during the process, like "what ever the cost, buy the right card for the 1DC". I lost quite a few shots on a corrupt card "Computerbay".

Feel free to critic.. As I said I'm learning :embarasse

Thanks

I think it was really nice. Did you shoot in 4K? If so how do you feel about the workflow on the 1DC?

Nice stuff. If I would offer some creative advice, I would say...play with the grading a bit more and how it interacts with the story. For example, when you flash back...give it a totally different feel to help illustrate that it is a different time. Maybe start with nice warm colors then flash back and use a slightly more creepy looks as you have.

Nice though.

I thought that was very good.

The only thing that bothered me was the "2 days later" caption. Because you went back to the same shot and dialog, it was already obvious that we'd come back the the present.
I was also thinking that she should have had different clothes on for the 2 different time periods, but I can see how that would have given the punchline away.

Since you asked...

The opening has cuts back and forth from the girl to some b-roll that she's not involved with in any way. She's not seeing the images of park/cemetery whatever it is, and so this is weaker than if she was. It seems like some extra footage spliced in,but unmotivated.

Second, there's a good Vertigo moment with the binoculars, but, the moment she sees something (which could have been drawn out longer, less clarity, more suspense) she just casually drops the binoculars down for a few seconds. That's the last thing she should have done, pretty much anything BUT that!

And so it occurs to me the opening vibe is wrong. She's just sort of depressed and melancholy, when the emotion you want to go with is being stalked, paranoid, afraid of something vague. Walking home alone at night might be a better way to go.

Thank you...

Good idea about the color grading...

Shooting 4k is great as long as you have the hardware to process it. Few month ago I bought the new Mac pro and I must say I'm not disappointed. I editing 4k real time. It allows you to correct certain framing mistake or create a fake zoom, as per my opening shot.

Although in this case I used film convert, I usually use the LUT utility to give me a base for color correction.

Thank you for a constructive critic,

I think that you have a point with opening of the film. Regarding the binocular scene, I guess that I was wondering how anyone would react, and I think that there is such a thing in not believing your own eyes, where you just freeze in disbelief. :) but I take your point that she would have probably got more agitated in real life.

haha that was great. good ending. (bit slow at the start)

well done!!!!
i love grading too so i noticed straight away the outside shots were desaturated and cooler (with greens too) at the start which was in stark contrast to the indoor shots.
was that intentional?

Thanks Phil...

It was indeed... I was trying to separate the dream part to the reality part. Grading is always a tricky thing to use for sending a message as some people may see it as inconsistency in your grading...

Enjoyed the whole concept! Thank you for posting. I do agree with a earlier poster that suggested warmer color early and then the stylized stuff later.

Nice one, thanks for sharing!
The 1Dc really puts out a nice image, kind of a shame that it never caught much attention.
I´m sure there's a Canon strategist rocking back and forth in a padded room repeatedly mumbling "It is gone sell, it is perfect for stills AND video - what else can do this?".

Hi Spartacus,

I think the price was definitely the deciding factor for many people. But to be honest, for me at the time, I wanted to upgrade for a camera that will last me for many years and give me the flexibility to explore the product without the feeling that I'm missing out on something else.

I personally like the Canon approach as opposed to other brands. When they release a product, they are not going to come to tease you with an upgraded product and more capabilities every 6 months. That tool can deliver, so now I know that it's down to me to learn, shoot and progress. A new camera will not give me more talent...

Beautiful shots man... and the movie was really cool :) I enjoyed the ending.

I see the point about the reaction. But I can also see how you were going for 'uncanny/slightly spooked out'. I don't know how I would've solved it.

The image is stunning. I would've kept the whole thing cold, I don't think it's necessary to differentiate when is real or when is dreamy. The whole thing feels like it's dreamy and spooky.

Amazing work man. I'm jealous. :)
