Short film (HVX200 with P+S Technik MINI35 Adapter)

Hi,
here is a clip from my latest Director of Photography work. Due to budget reason I have to work with HVX200 with a P+S Technik Mini35 system. Its been over a year since I last worked with this system, and it took me awhile to again get used to the 2 stop light lost. It takes a lot of lights to light this scene to a workable stop. Hope you guys like it, any criticism are greatly welcomed.

Great job man, looks like a heavy light set-up. Which lamp did you use to blast through the window there? It gives a nice contrast to the warmer interior lights.
Would like to watch it with sound as well.
And yeah, the flame reflections in the ceiling at the start was a really nice touch :)
Looks like you know your stuff well, keep it up!

I used a 1.2 HMI outside the window gel with Liberty Green, and another one inside next to the door with 1/2 CTO to back light the actors. 3 2K zip for the ambient, and a leko shoot through a water tank for the ceiling. Behind the bar I used 2 tweenies for the liquor shelves, it is not quite enough and now I hope I used 1K. A 1K hide behind the wall to lit the actors' faces.
 
Beautifull lit and framed, maybe a tad to much movement.
Love the idea with tha candle flame in the foreground.

yeah this looks awesome, do you maybe have some behind the scenes pics or footage to share?

also, was this single camera, or did you use two?

and the litte bit of haze through the window, did you use a smoke machine at all, looks natural, but just asking?

Your lighting was very nice indeed.
I felt the candle was a little distracting and overdone. You already have a nice amount of depth in your shot, and having the big bright candle took my focus away from the talent. Overall it looks very nice.
Great idea with shooting the light through water. Also, maybe a little more light on the guys face would help. Your female talent is nicely lit, and has a bright side and dark side, but the guy is all one shade and a little dark in comparison. Keep up the good work!

thanks for the reply and feed back. Yes I used a smoke machine, lots of smoke actually, if you've been to this set you'll think it is on fire.

Also thanks for the candle light suggestion, I've got some similar feedback from my DP friends, I'll pay more attention to it next time, the good thing is, the director likes it, so no harms done.
 
I'm aspiring to better my understanding and knowledge of DOP work, and through watching your clip and reading the feedback it has been an eye opener for me. I really like your scene, shooting through a water tank is a clever idea (I'll have to remember that ;) ) and the warm touch to the environment makes it feel cosy and safe. I like a lot, are we able to see the whole film?

Just one thing, how did you know to frame gate that I guess was added in post?
Did you mark it on the monitor? or maybe there is a function in the HVX I didn't know about..?:huh:

I just finished the film 2 weeks ago, I guess it'll still take the director awhile to finished the film.

Also Eyal, I marked the monitor for the 2.35:1 framing.
 
Lighting and framing is great.
Is this the final edit?
I would stay with the actors in the end. But what am I saying, I don't know the story.
 
Hey Randy,
that is, I think the best HVX/adapter footage I've ever seen. Really well lit and shot.
