Bah.

I was gonna wait until I finished the short, but I'm really dying for some feedback.

Anyways, here are some grabs from my first short! I hope to have it finished in a few days....I'll post the video then.

The short is about a private eye. I wrote it for a contest that some site was holding for shorts with the theme "A Magic Wand"; I wanted something that'd stand out from the Harry Potter wand waving entries, so this was my take. I never got it done; I didn't have access to a camera. Now that I have my DVX, I decided to make it anyway even though the contest is over.

I like the first and the last grabs the best. Seems a bit sharp for my taste and needs more shadows to be more like the great old B&W stuff. Nice framing and interesting composition.

yeah, i think that if there were some more harsh lights casting larger shadows on #2 and #3, they would fit much better. Or even just more black. Either way, they look cool. and I'm digging that hat.

Thanks for the input, guys. Shadows could be a lot better, I agree....however, considering I only had one work lamp (we had forgotten our other lights in our excitement and didn't want to waste the day by driving back and getting them), I think it's pretty good. Not as great as it could be by all means. I'll bring the other lights next shoot.

It looks awesome on my TV. :)

i think the cuts to black are a little harsh as well. you should try a fade to black unless the cuts were an "artistic choice". i also thought it was sorta funny how there was a cell phone in the shot seeing its supposedly a 30's noire. over all i liked it.

Yeah, the harsh cuts were more or less an artistic choice, but i have to see how it'll go with the voice over which hasn't been recorded yet (all editing so far is preliminary). Maybe I'll make it a slight fade to black instead of so sudden, but not a very long one.

Good! It's supposed to be. Glad you liked it.

Sadly, the shoot today fell through seeing as my friend (the actor and only other person working on this project), was hijacked by his parents into helping somebody move. He should be available later on tonight; we'll do some of the voice over recording.
