Shooting with hack on a very tight budget

I think that we could arrange group buy.
Chinese sellers are pretty ok with 10-50 items.
And this thing looks to be made much better than indian rigs.
As we have chinese speaking members we could call and directly ask them (it is generally better than email).

Count me in if we do this.

Vitaliy,
In another thread you also said that this :
http://www.indisystem.com/products/ultra_compact
Was also a good shoulder rig.

Hmm. It will be just useless speculation. :)
As this Indie rig is only on the way to me.
From usability side each one option has advantages.
For example, shoulder pad of Fancier is much better definitely.
They also have counterweight that is very important.
But I am not so sure about the offset required for vDSLRs.

I'll extend mike section soon, plus add few others.
If you ike Oktava, I suggest to look at Behringer B5. It is much cheaper with better quality.
I have this mike and love it. Despite that Behringer is also "crap brand" in pro audio world.

With you on the branding thing. I've been in audio since the analog days and in the past 5 years have had lots of equipment made by behringer, I have had no complaints. Ok it's not a Mackie, but I can make do.

Ignoring brands strengthens discipline. It is nice when one sees someone who's after a feature specifically, not a brand.

Just thought it was worthy of agreement. Rock on Vitaliy.

On a tight budget friends, $500.
What is a good recording device for recording singing voice?
We'll be using it for recording Girlfriend singing.

Right now I have this mic and interface.

Used Oade Brothers Modified Marantz 661

WOW philiplipetz. I looked at the reviews all are positive!
I have been looking for so long. I was about to buy babyface by RME but
they kept on pushing for the release date. Duet is also good but it only
works for mac. This seems to be the one I'm looking for for so long.

Does it have to be modified or hacked? What's the difference if I do not
modify it?

The Oade Brothers take the amps and replace them, producing a much cleaner and sweater sound. They make several models of mods, depending on whether you want to optimize for voice, orchestra, or pop music. Doug Oade is very good at answering emails if you are thinking of ordering a new unit.

I did many A-B comparisons with a Zoom 4n and there is simply no comparison. Much less background noise and the dialog has much more presence. Are there better units, yes, SOund Designs, but under a thousand there is simply nothing I have found that matches this. BTW they do mods on many different units, but Doug said this sounded better than an E4, even a modded E4. You can get modded united with time code if you need that.

Thank you so much bro. :)
It's about $562 @ amazon. About the same on ebay.

With the mod it's about $700. I'm still thinking If I need the mod for personal use.
All the reviews in amazon are all 5 stars. I guess this is the best bang for the bucks
since you wont be needing an external pre-amps and the quality is really really good.

The US distributor for Fancier gear in the US didn't have any updates on pricing or timing for the support rig stuff when I emailed him. Stay tuned I guess.

I'll try to add information about books and DVDs in next few days.
And some info about lighting and rigs in upcoming month or so.

That reminds me. I can highly recommend this 6 DVD set
The Master Course In High-End Blocking & Staging
Excellent for storyboarding and camera placement.

While I agree that this course is quite unique and best of its kind, it can be little overkill for beginners.
But this, of course, depend on specific needs.

I own two Sandisk Class 6 Extreme 16g SDHC cards. On the front it says 30MB/s. When I looked for a Class 10 Sandisk it also said 30MB/s.

And a Transcend card (which you say is okay to buy) is less than half the price if Sandisk... So am I missing something with my Class 6? And am I misunderstanding something with Transcend?

Sound. This is most difficult and controversal thing. And most important.

I absolutely agree. I teach ambient sound recording at Huddersfield University. Most of my students have had some experience of studio recording before. Much of my effort early on is to overcome what they already know. Placement is everything. To some degree you can get close with the main mic(s) and record ambience then mix it later, but it will never, ever compare to getting the one or two mics in the right position. And if you can't get mics in the right position it has to be ADR and loads of other post work.

I am also pleased you mentioned the legendary (Panasonic) WM-60 microphone capsule. I bought 20 of the similar WM-61s a few years ago and have adapted them to every possible use!

It is far better to put a cheap microphone in the right position to capture the right balance of direct to ambient sound than place a very expensive microphone just a couple of feet away from that. Placement is everything.

Besides, cheap omnis have a near perfect frequency response - they are just a little noisier than mics costing several thousand times more. Once all the other sound elements are factored in, the noise from a $1 mic is unnoticeable.

Sorry to be pragmatic:)

Tim.
